Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christopher Coots. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christopher, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Early in our business, in 2019, we decided to take a leap and invest in industrial sewing and embroidery machines. For those of you who aren’t familiar with these sorts of machines, they can be very expensive (and expansive), and we were unsure of just how well they would impact our business. We had to teach ourselves how to run these machines from the ground up, investing not only money but time and mental resources as well. This was a considerable risk for our baby business, but I am thankful that we were brave enough to take it, as the reaction to our product has been overwhelming (and positive)!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi friends! Chris and Judy here & we are the husband & wife team behind Adulting Axolotyl! Adulting Axolotyl is a creative accessories brand committed to making awesome, one-of-a-kind products featuring all your favorite fandoms, monsters, and weird cryptid friends. We started small in 2018 with our first few shows, then post-pandemic in 2022, we got serious! Adulting Axolotyl offers handmade bags, clutches, masks, embroideries, key chains, and more. We have recently expanded to custom print flannel and Hawaiian shirts, with jackets soon on the way! We have grown more and faster than we could have ever expected, and we are proud of the connections we have made, focusing on nurturing partnerships with artists and designs to set our product apart from others in our industry. We pride ourselves on high-quality products that you can’t find anywhere else.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For us, the most rewarding aspect of working with Adulting Axolotl is the ability to cultivate relationships with clients and artists alike. We love to be able to support other indie artists with our work and try to commission designs from artists from often overlooked backgrounds. Then there are our customers. So many repeat customers at our events, and we couldn’t be happier! There is nothing more uplifting than having a repeat customer who has been thrilled with their purchase and comes back for more.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our goal at Adulting Axolotyl is to spread joy and offer accessories that reflect our supporters and encourage them to be their best selves. We want to continue to build connections, increase artist visibility, and make cool bags! We hope that with hard work and dedication, we can make this our full-time focus rather than relying on supplemental jobs
