We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christopher Catalano a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christopher, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
This is an age old question for me as an inspiring musician. I was just joking with a friend, “Why couldn’t we have just been into cars?” The answer is yes and no. Over the past year and a half I have been on a new career journey. Last year I quit my day job at a hotel to become a full time musician and freelance camera person. For anyone who is a freelancer i’m sure you know it is not the most lucrative job in the beginning, its quite the opposite. SO I find myself in a place a lot of creatives find themselves in, which is unhappy, broke, tired and filled with cold brew. Now, just because I am broke and unhappy on the artist front, doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to be happy about with the life that I choose. I am always fulfilled with my journey wether it be hard or unhappy at times. I wouldn’t know any of my current peers, I wouldn’t have a lot of travel memories, I would have never traveled, I wouldn’t have moved to LA and met my fiancé and the lost goes on. We all think the grass is much greener on the other side, but we never stop to look at just how green the grass is that we are sitting on currently.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who are new to Owl Green this is a little bit of my journey and services to the art world. I am a Hip Hop artist who provides positive ear vibes to those in need as well as a visionary for social media content specializing in BTS content, concert photography as well as simplistic batch style music content. All my life I have been a creative and I owe that to my mom for sitting me down to draw and color a lot as a child. I come from a hard working family so its always been in my blood to hustle and work hard at my craft. What sets me apart from other people is my warm personality and constant effort. A lot of people always say to me “Do you ever get mad?” or “Owl Green is the chillest guy in Hip Hop” and I believe that is why people choose to work with me. By no means am I the best at what I do, but I believe that because I am so easy going, that I am the best to work with, and I pride myself on that and believe that is my true brand.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think the best way someone can support an artist/creative these days is easier than ever. Let’s start with social media. It is free to support someone on their socials. Comment, like and share. Just like that you’ve helped in a way that is unspeakable. Also, remember to support the small accounts. Just because someone doesn’t have a lot of followers or streams on a song doesn’t mean your not cool for supporting them. Often times you my feel more of a connection to an artist when you get the chance to grow with them on their journey.
Another way to support an artist/creative is to show up to a show or event they are apart of. If you have the means buy a shirt or a piece of art they have made. That purchase could help them in so many ways starting with just confidence that someone bought 1 thing is a lot to some.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I dedicate this question to anyone who thinks school isn’t for them. For me I have never been a big reader, I didn’t finish college, and Just had a hard time with the whole school thing. I am a hands on learner, i have to do it to learn it. I have learned so much of what I know today from watching creatives on youtube. Yes, thats right I am a graduate of YouTube university. When the pandemic hit and I was out of work, I had to pivot and learn how to create content for myself cause I didn’t have the money coming in to pay for it. I spent hours on youtube learning about video editing programs, tips and tricks, editing ideas, camera gear explanations and much more. What I learned for myself then, has turned into my biggest income stream now. IF you really have the desire to learn something, I guarantee you can get started on youtube.
