Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christopher and Amanda Combs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christopher and Amanda, appreciate you joining us today. One of the toughest parts of scaling a business is maintaining quality as you grow. How have you managed to maintain quality? Any stories or advice?
For a growing company we have always had high standards for our food. It is something we won’t budge on, even when products were scarce or prices were going up. We are so grateful to have family in the fresh organic farming area as well as a farmers market that is weekly right down the street from us. Our mission is simple and our slogan is true “Simple, Local, Fresh.” You can taste the difference when its fresh local tomatoes, vs some store bought from Mexico. No offense to those industries and the work they do to distribute food across the country, however for us. It’s an experience. And we want you to experience good food, prepared fresh, daily in our kitchen.
Christopher and Amanda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Solvang Flavors is, in a way all of our favorite things under one roof. Think European market/cafe meets Gelato Cafe. We craft all our own Gelato in house daily. We use traditional Italian recipes adding our own little twist, We create hand made crepes. Serving Savory and sweet alike. You can choose from a Strawberry and Nutella, or chicken and feta with pesto, roasted red peppers, and steamed spinach. Just 2 of several options to choose from.
Our Tea and Espresso bar is top shelf. Serving some of the best tea’s in the world, locally roasted espresso beans, dairy free options. We would challenge any coffee bar serving more options at a better price than us.
We house hand crafted proprietary chocolates, fresh made cannoli, exclusive Solvang Flavors wine, supported by a great selection of other wines and beers. We have something for your entire family.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Our Pivot came as a couple/business partners. Prior to Covid, Amanda was a full time Hair Professional, she had a steady clientele, was a educator and business partner in a salon down town. As we all know, once the shut downs happened, a lot changed. She evolved into working at Flavors and as time went on, her role became much more invaluable. thus came the decision for us that she wouldn’t be going back to the salon industry anytime soon.
Amanda has the ability to jump in head first and learn a new skill quickly. It has now been 3 years since her full time involvement in Solvang Flavors, and the only question is, how did we ever do it without her.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the very early weeks of Amanda’s transition to Flavors, Customers were a bit more sensitive than we had really experienced before. Unfortunately, Amanda had a interaction with a customer that would probably cause most people to quite their job. She new it was a difficult time for everyone, and we weren’t even sure if we would be able to keep our doors open.
True resilience was shown that day. Knowing you can’t go back to your industry and this just became the new normal.
We are glad those days are starting to be further in the past.
