We recently connected with Christine Newberg and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christine , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Voicing for the Trevor Project has been very meaningful for me, as it is a way my work and voice have been used to benefit society because it helps a special and marginalized group. Often in voice over, our work is to promote products and typical commercialized services. When my voice is used to help others, especially for women or for the LGBTQ community, then it’s more useful and impactful. Someone very dear to me is part of the LGBTQ community, so voicing for the Trevor Project feels even more personal and important.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My job as a voice talent and artist is so varied, exciting, and rewarding. And “creative services” is a great broad term to describe what I do!
As an artist, I provide live art entertainment at events such as traditional and digital caricaturing, painting, mysterious hit-and-run drawings, and guest-creation stations. Then I also provide studio work, like commissioned drawings and paintings too! I’ve coined the term “attractive likeness” for event portraiture and that’s how I approach all of my live portrait and caricature work – and probably why I’ve been hired for so many weddings and corporate functions. I’ve live-drawn celebrities such as basketball player Glen Rice, Dolphins football player Kim Bokamper, news anchor Trina Robinson, and TV food connoisseur Guy Fieri!
As a voiceover artist, I provide a deeper sultry feminine sound with a rich variety of inflection and wide age-range. I’ve voiced national, regional, and local TV and radio commercials as well as business videos, PSAs, and major corporate phone systems. I’ve voiced for Tiffany’s, Crest, Baby Einstein, The Trevor Project, and Alfa Romeo and Porsche car commercials just to name a few!
But some of the most fun projects I get to work on are a combination of my talents. Proposal caricatures are my favorite! I absolutely love helping people create the most creative proposal using a caricature to ask the question! Weeks or months before, I work with the proposer to develop a plan to surprise their fiancé/ fiancée. We figure out the best location and write a script for how the proposal will occur. Some of my best work experiences have been helping to create these memorable moments for couples!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes! It’s so important for me to provide for my children. Knowing I can do that using my talents fuels me everyday. As a single parent, my children greatly depend on me.
During that last five years, I’ve grown through a process of becoming more financially independent. Being an entrepreneur is both challenging and triumphant. I’ve learned that I’ll do what I need to do to provide for my kids while also doing what I love. This makes me proud, resilient, and pushes me to excel and succeed. And for that reason, everyday I get better at what I do!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Absolutely. As a female, society has taught us to not be too assertive or too aggressive, or too competitive in the workplace or we come off the “wrong way”. I’ve had to unlearn these ridiculous expectations on women.
Now I actively chase work, invoice clients, challenge unfair situations, negotiate rates and terms better, and have developed a better voice for standing up for myself in my creative fields.
I’m a work in progress, but I’ll keep unlearning lessons that hold any of us back. Real self-improvement and education really is a combination learning and unlearning.
