Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christina Roberts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
In the photography world, there is often the perception that the market is oversaturated and full of people “just like you,” however when you tease apart the intricacies of why people choose your artisty or services over the thousands of others in the field, it’s because we are each incredibly unique. While styles can come and go, it’s the connection and personal interactions with each client that makes experiences rememberable and subsequently successful. From the initial greeting or introduction, all the way to the final gallery delivery, and even friendships that develop thereafter, the human element is the key and can be the difference between just a service or a full unforgettable experience.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello there! My name is Christina Roberts. I am newly relocated to the Sacramento, Loomis, CA area from the Bay Area, but still travel to the Bay from time to time. My passion is in landscape portrait photography where I strive to weave the beauty of our epic natural surroundings with the love and connection between couples, and family members. I am a mama to two precious little ones, ages 5 and 7, who inspire my creative journey as a photographer each and every day. I am also a school psychologist working with children from diverse need and backgrounds from TK through 8th grade.
As a family photographer specializing in landscape portrait photography, my passion lies in more than just capturing picturesque scenes; it’s about encapsulating the emotive and authentic moments shared within them. With an innate understanding of how light and color can enhance storytelling, I embark on a journey with each family I photograph, seeking to capture the genuine connections and heartfelt exchanges that define their bonds. Through my lens, I strive to unveil the raw emotions, the spontaneous laughter, and the tender embraces that paint a vivid portrait of love against the backdrop of nature’s beauty Join me, where each click of the shutter captures not just a moment, but a timeless narrative of togetherness and joy.
When seeking out a photographer, there are often two main questions that arrise: Do we need experience in-front of a camera, and What do we wear?
While not all sessions unfold naturally or without hiccups along the way, I welcome opportunities to scaffold authentic moments, through games, activities, and documenting the moments in-between. Approaching a session in this way, allows families to be themselves, relax, and truly enjoy the moments. Sessions include play, snuggles, sharing laughs, or just enjoying the beauty of nature. While some images will be posed, a majority of our time together will be fun and carefree so I can create art that conveys the little, as well as the impactful moments during this season in life. All sessions are planned outdoors and typically at golden hour (before sunset) to capture that beautiful California golden light.
As for wardrobe, styling is one of my favorite creative components of planning a session. Not only do families have access to my extensive Client Closet with various sizes and styles, but also access to a personalized wardrobe consultation service w/ Style&Select. Together, we will create the perfect combination of colors, textures, and patterns for a beautiful session.
As the end of the day, if you can feel the images, and relive those beautiful moments through the memories we created, I have done my job.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I have been a photographer for 7 years, and through my experiences have learned the difference between being chosen as a service provider and an artist. In the early years as a photographer, I was highly focused on the income aspect and would take on any sessions, whether they were a match for my creative visions, or not. I was not specializing in any particular genre and therefore was unable to hone in on what spoke to me as an artist. Once I realized that I loved a certain aesthetic, and wanted to strive to evoke true emotion in my images though a documentary storytelling experience, I fell into my niche and was able to focus on creating galleries for my clients that was true to me and what continues to keep that fire going within.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Connection, connection, connection. Although word of mouth is only one part of building a successful business, it is a huge foundation that can foster ongoing opportunities within your community and beyond. I have gained my most loyal clients through Model Calls, offering my services through school auctions, and attending events with other creatives and business owners. Being able to build relationships within the industry, as well as demonstrate a true sense of ‘community over competition’ elevates not only you as a business owner, but reliable person and friend within an industry that can otherwise be very cold and intense. Building those connections is key and can turn a good photographer into a great one!
