We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christina Reid a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Six years ago, I had a job at a print shop that I did not enjoy. The environment was very stressful and I struggled to see the purpose of that position in my life.
Less than six months after resigning from my position at the print shop, my business, 5931handmade, began to blossom. I quickly realized my position at the print shop was not time wasted. All of the training I received and the skills I developed in creating and producing marketing materials were crucial in this next phase of my life.
In my business logo, you will see the wording “Nothing is Wasted” which is a rephrase of the scripture Romans 8:28 in the Bible. I believe this scripture is a direct representation of my time at the print shop. Although I couldn’t see the purpose of that position during that period, it became obvious that I was being prepared for what was to come. I am truly grateful for every experience I’ve had up until this point that has made me the dedicated business owner I’ve become.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In 2019, I participated in a Christmas gift exchange with friends and gifted my first crochet cup cozy. During this exchange, my friends inquired about purchasing more cup cozies from me. At that time, I had no intention of selling my crochet pieces. However, God had other plans! I began selling cup cozies, then beanies and scarves! Before I knew it, my hobby blossomed into my business, 5931handmade. The “5931” in my business name is the last four digits of my grandma’s phone number. She taught me so much of what I know; the least I could do is honor her through my work. 5931handmade is an e-commerce store offering handmade jewelry, crochet apparel and accessories. I offer custom and wholesale orders upon request. You will likely find me vending at a local market in the triad area on the weekend. I love to interact with my customers face-to-face when I can!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is providing a personalized experience to each of my customers.
I participate in craft markets almost every weekend in the triad area. During those markets, I provide a custom jewelry bar. My customer has the ability to select a ring style, stone/bead and a metal finish and I will make the ring for them on-site. The joy each customer exudes when I hand over their custom ring is so exhilarating. Just the thought of my work bringing any amount of happiness to my customers gives me joy!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My business name was originally 5931crochet. When I started my business, I only offered crochet products. I quickly realized that my skill set stretched beyond crochet and I did not want to limit myself. I decided I would change my business name to 5931handmade to encompass all of the skills I had developed and skills I’ve yet to learn. I would definitely encourage other business owners to do the same. Do not let fear limit your ability to create and expand!
