Christina , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I think as an artist, the kindest thing anyone can do for you is to give you an opportunity to show your work. I have had so many kind people in my art career who have taken a chance on me. Whether it was a referral, a connection, or a space on a wall, it has all contributed to my growth as an artist. I am sincerely grateful for everyone who has given me a leg up. As an artist, you must never underestimate the power of connection.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always been creative and have always expressed myself through art in one form or another. I went to college for Architecture, but when drawing became computerized, I lost interest. I didn’t take up painting until I was 34 and a stay at home Mom with four children. I picked up acrylics because it was the most kid friendly. Drying quickly, with no need for mediums or solvents, it was my best choice for a home with a lot of little fingers. My love for realism though was not really represented in this genre of painting. Many people encouraged me to switch to oils, but I had fallen in love with the immediacy of acrylics. Because of this I created a bit of a niche for myself. There were not a lot of artist working representationally in acrylics when I started.
Because of this I have become the only instructor at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art teaching in acrylics.
To be able to teach what you love is and create as a profession a double blessing.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
A sale is always rewarding. The fact that someone relates to your work and appreciates it enough to spend their hard earned money to have it hang in their home is an honor. I know not everyone can afford original art, but even a compliment or word of encouragement is always a blessing. People often don’t realize the amount of time and effort go into a painting, so to have someone appreciate what you do is what keeps you going some days. I must also say that teaching is a very rewarding job. To impart my love for the craft onto someone else and seeing their progress and passion is an amazing gift.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
As I said in one of the previous questions, a kind word, a “share” on social media, a referral, a sale, all of this supports us as creatives. Art is something that speaks to everyone, just like music or theatre. It is a place for a person to be transported into another reality. The great thing about being an artist is that I may have had a specific feeling or emotion that I was expressing through my painting and yet, someone will tell me what my painting said to them, which often times is not at all what I had intended. I love that. I hear some of the most interesting commentaries on my work and it makes me happy that someone feels something from it.
