We were lucky to catch up with Christina Ng recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve had the opportunity to work on is the, “Seeds for the Future,” school garden grant program put on by Berry Good Food. This project is near and dear to my heart because of its focus on teaching students of all ages about the essential connection between the garden and the kitchen. In this past year, I’ve had a blast participating in a variety of activities under this grant program including establishing school gardens, hosting garden spruce up days, and teaching plant-centric cooking classes using produce harvested straight from the garden. It’s been a true joy building community with my favorite tool, good food.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been a life long lover of food. It only felt natural to make food my life as I went through my schooling years looking to build a career. From the farmer’s market, to a food truck, to a grocery store, I’ve walked many paths in the food arena. Over the years, I’ve gotten to experience the joy and personal satisfaction of preparing and serving food at these places, and while I still draw happiness from it, I’ve found a new appreciation for food education. On my current path, my hope is to use my energy and skill set to help foster the next generation of eaters, cooks, and food enthusiasts. In the last 4 years, I’ve had the pleasure of hosting an array of food education initiatives with Berry Good Food, and hope to work for many more years to provide as many opportunities as possible for the San Diego community to grow a food movement.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Relationships are everything, especially when it comes to building a trustworthy reputation in the food community! I’ve found that being realistic about my commitments and fulfilling what I’ve promised to the best of my abilities have helped me to build positivity and confidence around my work.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic threw a huge curve ball into all of our lives, and the work I was doing at the time was no exception. Originally, the messaging conveyed through my work was to source the best food possible from as close as possible. This often came with a premium price tag that made good food seem unattainable or out of range for the greater community. Flash forward to now, and the messaging I now share with stakeholders is to learn as much as possible about the pathways of good food, so that the best choices can be made to achieve an improved state of health and well being.
