We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christina Mendjul a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.

How did you learn to do what you do? My journey into the realm of architecture with a focus on ecological integration and high-tech parametric tools has been a colorful tapestry of exploration and innovation. Each project serves as a canvas for me to blend artistic vision with technological prowess. I’ve drawn from a diverse palette of learning experiences, from the structured framework of formal education to the hands-on brushstrokes of real-world projects. Embracing a philosophy of perpetual learning, I’ve delved into the depths of parametric design software, sculpting digital landscapes that harmonize with nature’s rhythms. I’ve cultivated a unique skill set that transcends conventional boundaries.
Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process?
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize the value of mentorship as a catalyst for accelerated growth. To expedite my learning process, I could have sought out master craftsmen of the architectural world, forging bonds that bridge generations of wisdom. By immersing myself in the crucible of collaboration earlier on, I would have distilled insights and techniques that transcend textbooks and tutorials. Furthermore, embracing a mindset of experimentation and fearlessness would have propelled me beyond the confines of comfort, catalyzing innovation at every turn.
What skills do you think were most essential?
At the heart of my craft lies a fusion of technical proficiency and artistic intuition. Mastery of parametric design tools serves as the chisel with which I carve intricate forms from the digital ether. Yet, it is the ability to imbue these creations with soulful narratives rooted in ecological stewardship that truly sets them apart. Essential skills include a keen eye for detail, an aptitude for interdisciplinary collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As a storyteller in stone and steel, effective communication becomes my brushstroke, weaving threads of meaning into the fabric of each project.
The path to enlightenment is often beset with thorns of adversity, yet each challenge becomes a stepping stone to greater heights. One hurdle I’ve encountered is the scarcity of resources tailored to the intersection of parametric design and ecological sensitivity. However, by viewing constraints as catalysts for creativity, I’ve unearthed hidden gems amidst the rubble of limitation. Time, too, emerges as a formidable adversary, demanding judicious allocation and unwavering dedication. Yet, it is through the crucible of adversity that true mastery is forged, transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth and innovation.

As a woman in this industry, I’ve embraced the opportunity to challenge norms and pave my own path. My journey has taken me across continents, gathering inspiration and honing my craft along the way. My educational journey reflects this diversity, with a foundational degree from Bezalel Academy and a master’s from the esteemed Cooper Union in New York City.

During my time in Venice at the Università Iuav di Venezia, I immersed myself in the rich history of architecture while exploring the intersection of tradition and innovation. This experience broadened my perspective and instilled in me a deep appreciation for the cultural nuances that shape design.

But perhaps some of the most formative moments of my career occurred during my time in India. Immersed in the vibrant tapestry of its landscapes and communities, I embarked on an expedition that would forever change my approach to architecture. Collaborating with a diverse group of visionaries, we created spontaneous architecture that transcended conventional boundaries. Together, we designed and built classes for agricultural schools, blending sustainable practices with local craftsmanship to empower communities and foster growth.

These experiences have not only enriched my understanding of architecture but have also shaped my approach as an entrepreneur. I’ve learned to embrace uncertainty, to see challenges as opportunities, and to lead with empathy and resilience.

What sets me apart is not just my expertise in architecture, but my ability to weave together diverse perspectives and experiences to create truly transformative spaces.
