We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christina Lockett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I have always loved everything related to the arts. As a very young girl I was in ballet class, I sang in the choir, I played hand bells, and I acted in school productions. During my years in school each performing arts teacher I encountered set high expectations for the entire class. They pushed us to give our very best.
Out of everything I learned the best learning experience was my training to become a radio personality. Klarque Garrison taught me so much that its a challenge to describe it. Knowing what I know now I would have pursued a degree in communications. I have no regrets earning a degree in education. I just had no idea how much I would enjoy being a radio and television personality. The only obstacles that stood in the way of me learning more about radio is access. Sometimes it is a challenge to connect with people who do what you do. It is even more of a challenge to network with people in the same field that are willing to teach you. One of the reasons I am very quick to share and train others who desire to learn their craft.

Christina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an educator but aside from that I am most proud of what I do after school. Everything related to ministry and my brand is a blessing. I have been preaching over 18 years. Writing and self-publishing 5 inspirational books was something I never dreamed of doing. Acting in Gospel Stage plays, being a radio and television host are passion and purpose driven for me. Every quarter when I release my inspirational magazine joy fills my heart. It gives me joy to spread a message of hope to others. Everyday I pray that I can say or do something to draw people closer to God, put a smile on their face, or give them hope to keep pushing forward in life.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a radio personality is the feedback. I love when I able to share my platform with rising artists. When I interview new recording artists or new authors they are excited about the new doors that may open for them. They are grateful to gain new fans from our listening audience. It is so rewarding for a listening audience member to call in or send a message saying thanks for discussing certain topics and/or sharing a testimony on the air because it helped them. I feel my life’s purpose is to help others and I get to do that each day I am on the radio.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Attending special events is one way I meet new people to be special guests on my radio show. It is also how I build our listening audience. Sometimes I am the speaker or an author vendor at an event. Other times I am just attending but either way I meet people that I would not normally meet. My advice is to always be approachable.
