We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christina King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christina below.
Hi Christina, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I am a life coach, and I specialize in mindset work. I started my business in late 2020 and got certified as a coach in March 2022. Before starting my business, I always knew I wanted to work for myself, and the goal of my venture would be to primarily focus on helping others. I wasn’t sure how that was going to look. I explored and researched a variety of different career options, but the career choices didn’t feel like a good fit.
You see, I grew up with the unique experience of assisting my family with being a caretaker for my brother, who has autism and epilepsy. Looking back, it was and still is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. My brother is my best friend and the inspiration for my business. I am grateful he is in my life. In a way, I was my brother’s life coach before I even realized that’s what I was doing. Throughout the years, I have accompanied him on several excursions to the grocery store, the pharmacy, out to eat, to the movies, and have taught him how to prepare his meals. Today, my brother is a young adult working a full-time job, and in his spare time, he enjoys being with his friends, family, painting, and working out.
I came across the life coaching industry in 2019, not knowing much about the field beforehand. After doing some more research and talking to people who work as coaches, I decided I wanted to be part of this world, and I have never looked back. It’s been quite a journey.
What truly makes this work so rewarding is that the work starts with one individual person as your client. Then, you begin to work together. No matter what their circumstances may be, with your help as their coach, they commit to accomplishing their own achievements. They also experience a wonderful transformation in the process. The coach and client co-create this incredible partnership and an accountability plan. The client is never truly alone in this journey. I’ve learned it’s amazing to achieve your goals with someone in your corner versus doing so on your own. Since the start of my business in 2020, I have worked with several clients who’ve gone on to make great changes in their lives, achieved their lifelong goals, and are happier than ever. I am proud of every single person I’ve helped so far, and the best is yet to come.
Christina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In the past, I have had friends, family, loved ones, and even STRANGERS share their life stories and ask me for my advice on their relationships, their life’s purpose, and their other issues. This occurred many times in high school, college, and beyond. I also realized that I really do love to hear people’s stories and experiences, it really does bring me joy! One of my favorite parts of being a coach is listening to my clients talk about their lives in each of our sessions.
Prior to that, I grew up with an autistic sibling, as I explained earlier. Having to adapt to change and growing up quicker than normal, I always labeled myself as an “old soul”. I had this wisdom that I didn’t know where it came from. I adapted to this caretaker role, which led to this dream of wanting to help others.
I got into life coaching, largely because of my desire to help other people. Years ago, I considered being a therapist, but I decided it wasn’t for me after I did not enjoy my psychology courses at my university. I also realized I’d have to go through years of schooling, which did not excite me. I considered a variety of careers which includes, but are not limited to the following; realtor, makeup artist, travel agent, and other service-based professions. After hearing about the field of coaching from a friend, and following my intuition, I had a gut feeling that this was my calling. I researched many coaching certifications, found a great life coaching school, and I graduated from their program last year.
My entire life, I have been a writer, and writing is a big part of my journey in how I became the person I am today. I graduated from college with a Bachelor’s Degree in English with a Concentration in Writing. I knew that I didn’t want to work as a teacher, but I’ve always known writing would be involved in my career in some way. One of the many dreams that I have is to be a published author one day, which I know will happen.
As of right now, I have a 1:1 private life coaching program with clients for 90 days at a time, with the option to renew for longer if they choose to. I work as a general life coach, which means I can serve many people who have different needs. Mainly, I work with women. I also have a specialized focus on assisting my clients with mindset work. The problems I help my clients solve are how to break free from toxic patterns, and situations, and live an abundant life by providing tools to build a stronger mindset. I am most proud of my clients’ transformations. My clients achieve their lifelong goals and put themselves and their happiness first. I encourage women to listen to their intuition, lean into their desires, and provide them with tools to trust themselves completely. I love what I do, and I hope that shows.
I am a huge advocate for accountability. I always take a stand for what my clients want to create in their lives. I’m extremely empathetic and caring. I always want to make sure my clients are well-taken care of. They are fully supported every step of the way. My clients are provided with resources to support their journey of working with me as their coach. I will often give my clients journal prompts for deeper reflections, book and podcast recommendations, and as well as other personal development exercises so they can truly blossom into the person they are meant to be.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that we need to accomplish our goals and other aspirations alone. We need to work hard by ourselves in order to achieve what we want. I no longer believe in doing things alone, due to a struggle that I went through, and I overcame that hardship.
I have learned it is more beneficial, and much more worthwhile to do things while in a community with other people supporting you! We can’t and shouldn’t do things alone. I haven’t built my business by myself for a reason–I have a whole community of peers, coach friends, and other entrepreneurs who I lean on in times of hardship and we celebrate each other during positive moments. One of my coaching school’s philosophies for building a business is “Work for yourself, but never by yourself.” I couldn’t agree more.
Some people may not know this story about me. I am now much more open about this story with my friends, family, community, and the other people in my life. I didn’t have a driver’s license until I was 25 years old. I was crippled with anxiety whenever I got behind the wheel of a car. I felt so alone and scared. I didn’t feel that the instructors who had worked with me on my driving skills were very understanding of my fears and emotions. I didn’t feel supported at all. This led to me not driving a car from the time I was 19 until about 24 years old. After failing not one, not two, but THREE road tests, finally, I decided, with the help of some of my loved ones, that it was time to go ahead and pursue driving lessons (again) and get back up on the horse. This time, I partnered with a different driving instructor who was a strong, caring, compassionate, and bold woman. She came recommended to me by a friend. She believed in me, supported me, and encouraged me every step of the way. Something that I had never had before. Long story short, I passed my road test at 25 with flying colors. While I did the actual driving test on my own, and my strength and resilience got me there, she was there to support me and teach me in the process. I am very grateful to that driving instructor.
This is why I no longer chase after my goals, dreams, or desires without a community. It has proven to be more beneficial and it is more FUN to do so! I have learned I am never alone. As long as I have people supporting me, I can accomplish anything.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I love reading personal development and entrepreneurship books. Here are two books that I have read in the last year that have profoundly affected me as a business owner and coach!
“We Should All Be Millionaires” by Rachel Rodgers is a wonderful book about how one should live an abundant life. Rachel’s own experiences from working in a corporate law firm to having her own successful business coaching practice is a wonderful transformation that I loved reading about. How we should create our own opportunities, hire a team in our businesses, and support our families, and how to be financially smart and savvy as well. I have never enjoyed a book about money and finances so much until I read this one.
“Girl on Fire” by Cara Alwill is an excellent book for women entrepreneurs and about how to choose yourself in your life and business. Create your own opportunities, and not wait for permission from others. We live in a world now where it’s very easy to self-publish your own book (something Cara has done herself and talks about in this book), create your own podcast, create your own income, and create other opportunities as well. Cara empowers women to be trailblazers and to be the hero of their own lives. I really love Cara’s personality as well. That shows through the book. I got the opportunity to meet her recently and she was so lovely. She was extremely down-to-earth and passionate about her work. She is one of my role models in the coaching world, and such an intelligent entrepreneur and generous human being. I highly recommend her books, she has written several, all about women’s entrepreneurship, business, and leadership.
