We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christina Gordon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
If there is one thing I could change, I wish I would have started my permanent makeup/ tattoo career so much sooner
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Christina! I am from California (Sonoma county and San Diego!) my background has always been in the restaurant and beer industry. I also got into the sales side of selling beer which I think really helped me develop into the organized and self sufficient artist I am today. Growing up I was always an artist and dreamed of being a tattoo artist but women in the tattoo industry wasn’t very popular or welcomed when I was 18. Fast forward to 2017 when I got my brows tattooed, I knew this was the path for me. I finally took the steps to become a trained and licensed permanent makeup artist. I quickly learned that trying to build a client in the permanent makeup industry was extremely difficult so I began to learn other services. I ended up falling back in love with drawling and art which led me to learn fine line tattoos. I still can’t believe I get to create art on people for a living! I meet so many wonderful people and truly believe I have the best clients! Going from a “safe job” working for someone else to running and operating your own business is not for the faint of heart. It’s a lot of hard work and dedication. You have to be on top of everything and stay organized. Not many people see the behind the scenes work. But I promise it is so rewarding if you just stick with it through the hard times. When people come to see me for brows, lips, or a body tattoo, I make sure every client gets the best customer experience, from the phone consultation and through the service. I see the lack of excellent customer service in this industry, and I am here to change that!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me in being an artist is seeing my client’s faces light up when we are the finished with the tattoo or new brows. I would say brows are the most transformative. New brows can be an emotional impact on the client when you can make them feel beautiful by achieving their brows goal. Memorial tattoos are also very sentimental for me. When we can bring something to life that is in honor of a loved one or animal, it warms my heart!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Moving to a new state and starting a new business and not knowing anyone is probably the hardest thing I have done. I really had to grind from the bottom to get where I am today. I’m still nowhere close where I want to be but I’m one step closer every day
