We recently connected with Christina F Richardson and have shared our conversation below.
Christina F, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
In 2015, the Black Organization for Ladies Development (B.O.L.D) was established as a non-profit organization with a mission to promote wellness and beauty lifestyles for young women. B.O.L.D aims to create a safe environment where women can discuss self-esteem and inclusivity in the beauty industry and society as a whole.
During that period, I started working in retail as a beauty advisor, which led me to become a makeup artist. This experience allowed me to interact with women who shared their struggles with beauty products. To understand how beauty and self-esteem are connected and how they impact people’s image, I started exploring this powerful concept. Utilizing my skills and knowledge about cosmetics, ingredients, and techniques, I began working as a freelancer.
In 2017, I merged my love of beauty and my mission for encouraging self-awareness. As a result, I founded B.O.L.D Makeup Studio, which provides mobile beauty services for clients to connect with a licensed Cosmetologist & Pro Makeup Artist. B.O.L.D offers Makeup and Teaching services for those who want to learn the basics of good Foundation Application or design a Makeup look customized to their style, facial features, standards of beauty, and more!

Christina F, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’d love to share my journey with you! When I was growing up, my family taught me so much about beauty. My mom was a whiz with hair, my aunt was a nail pro, and my grandma and great-grandma loved ordering Avon beauty products. They even used to buy me little makeup sets and lip balms!
As I got older, I realized how important beauty can be for our self-esteem and overall health. That’s why I studied cosmetology and worked with major beauty brands like M.A.C. But I also noticed how few makeup options there were for people with darker skin tones, and that’s when I knew I had to do something. That’s why I started B.O.L.D Makeup Studio – to offer customized makeup services and high-quality products that make everyone feel beautiful and confident. I take so much pride in helping people feel good about themselves, and I can’t wait to keep growing my brand and making a positive impact on people’s lives!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
On New Year’s Eve in New York City, I had a client booked at a hotel in Times Square. As a native New Yorker, I knew that Times Square was the last place I wanted to be during rush hour. When I arrived downtown, the streets were blocked off with barricades, and I needed to get across the street to my client’s hotel. Her scheduled appointment was at 7 pm, which was my last availability. Despite many failed attempts to explain my situation to the officers, I was reluctant to call my client and cancel the appointment. By then, it was already 10 pm. However, I persevered and called my client, who told me her boyfriend was a police officer and would come to get me.
As we arrived back at the hotel, I immediately set up and began doing her makeup. After she was finished and getting dressed, her boyfriend thanked me and said that this wouldn’t have been possible without my help. He then showed me the engagement ring and told me that he was planning to propose. I was so glad that I got her ready before the ball dropped and stayed committed to getting the job done.
This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. Despite the challenges I faced, I remained committed to providing the best service possible, and in doing so, I was able to help create a truly memorable moment for my client and her partner.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Client Retention is important in any business. Whenever, I have the opportunity to work with a new client, I try to get to know more about them outside of makeup. Like, what’s their favorite hobby or food.
Often, I get bookings for Birthday makeup appointments. That is a great reminder to send a gift or after several appointments, I offer a loyalty discount on their next service. I believe it shows my clients that I truly appreciate their time & support. Also, that I care about them and want to keep working with them in the future.
