We were lucky to catch up with Christina Dix recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success doesn’t come easy. In fact, being successful has its challenges and every day I am learning. Success means so many things. Risks. Being vulnerable. Courage. Work, so much work. Success also brings excitement, joy and a ton of opportunities if you allow it.
Today I am still learning how to be successful with wedding photography. I started photography in 2012, but truly, if you ask me, I’ve had a camera in hand since I was a child. Actually, my dad submitted one of my first photos to a local newspaper and it got published. I should have known then that photography would play such a huge role in my life.
Success and its challenges looks different for everyone and everyone in this business. For me, the art of photography comes easy. I enjoy the art and it makes me so excited to have a camera in my hand! Now, there’s some logistics that I had to learn and am still learning every day but that’s what makes you successful. Of course, like anything else, you can always learn and improve no matter how comfortable you feel.
With photography, though it might feel effortless, I have always believed there is always room for improvement. It’s 2023 and I still feel this way. There is always room for improvement and I truly believe that is the key to success.
Christina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! My name is Christina and I am the head photographer for Trace Creek Manor Fine Art Photography.
I started photography professionally in 2012 but it wasn’t until 2014 that I would photograph my first wedding. One of my best friends asked me to photograph her wedding in Key West, Florida. Without her push for me to photograph her wedding, I really don’t know where I would be today as a wedding photographer. Plus, can you believe this wedding, my very first wedding, was published in a printed magazine called Beautiful Bride featuring David Tutera. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Having my first wedding published was such an inspiration, it set a fire within me and truly set the bar high for my future.
We photograph fine art weddings all over the world but are currently based out of Nashville, Tennessee. We provide a luxurious experience for our clients from the very first consultation over zoom to when we deliver your wedding album. Our collections are fully customizable but we find that most of our couples are looking for a full day coverage which most of our collections include. Our collections also include a second photographer, an engagement portrait session with 2 locations and 2 outfit changes and a premium printed wedding album. Lastly, we will help our clients create a wedding timeline to help ensure we fit all of their photography needs into their day!
When you preview our portfolio, you will find that our images are elegant, timeless, sophisticated and romantic. We absolutely adore the soft, pastel colors and we thrive on natural light. We are intentional with every image we photograph and crave authentic and genuine moments between you and your partner. In addition to those sweet moments, we absolutely adore photographing details. Oh how we love wedding day details!
Our goal for the day is to make sure you have a gallery that you absolutely love, with the fine art aesthetic that you hired us for! We stand out to our clients because of our authenticity, our relationships that we have with each of our couples. We aren’t just here for another “job”, we have a love for the art of photography… for the love of fine art artistry and our photography, our portfolio, is a reflection of just that.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My website, blogging, showing consistency in my socials and asking for reviews are a few ways I grow my clientele. But one of the most effective strategies for growing my clientele is having authentic relationships with each and everyone of my couples (which isn’t hard to do!). In addition to being your wedding photographer, I also want to be your friend. I don’t want it to be a goodbye after your wedding day! Some of my brides have grown to be some of my greatest friends! I’ve learned over time if they happen to be an ideal client, then they will certainly be a friend of mine too and I love it!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am a mom of 4 girls (currently rocking my sweet 1 month old in her bouncer as we speak)!
When I was pregnant with my second daughter, Zara, I worked at Rooms to Go near Tampa, Florida. At the time, I did both photography and worked at Rooms to Go. I was doing very well with photography but ultimately, with being pregnant and doing photography on the side, it was time to make a decision. With the love and support from my family and friends, I took a leap of faith and took on photography full time and said goodbye to my corporate position of 10 years. It was a very scary decision but a necessary one.
Choosing to do photography full time not only gave me the flexibility that I needed as a mom but it also opened up new doors and opportunities for myself as a photographer.
