We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christina Dinglasan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christina below.
Christina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
The idea of becoming a Permanent makeup artist was easy. The commitment to investing in myself was the difficult part. I believe, when you are accustomed to a 9-5 job and are not familiar with entrepreneurship, you are much more hesitant and not in the correct headspace to take those kinds of risks. Several years ago, I had the idea of becoming a PMU artist but thought of too many “What if” situations. What if it doesn’t work out? What if I don’t get any clients? I was too comfortable with my day job, that the risk of it not working out as a PMU artist was not worth it. Fast forward to 2019, I was laid off from my job and had nothing to lose. I invested in a course, and it’s been continuous growth since then. Here’s the thing, I did not have it all figured out. I didn’t have a blueprint to success. I took it step by step. If I sat down and wrote down everything that needed to be done for me to succeed, I would be overwhelmed and discouraged to even start. I believe the important part is to start. Once you start and begin taking on more responsibility as a business, those steps of what needs to be tackled will come organically. Everyone’s path is different so taking those small steps and checking things off the list is the actual growth. I do not have a background in business, so my journey to becoming a successful business was far from a systematic approach.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I wanted to get into the PMU industry back in 2014 but at the time there was not an available course to learn, or any kind of apprenticeship being offered. I took a course and became a certified PMU artist in 2019. I now own and operate my own 2,200 sq ft studio. The Brows Made Studio & Academy specializes in services such as Ombre powder brows, hybrid brows, lip blush, eyeliner tattoo, Inkless epidermal resurfacing (IER) also known as stretch mark removal, saline tattoo removal, and tiny tattoos. Our Academy offers students a beginner and advanced course to become a PMU artist and ongoing support as they develop their skills as a new artist. The studio has become a hub for both aspiring and successful PMU artists. Permanent make up has come a long way from what it used to be. The techniques used today, and pigments available are far advanced then it once was.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Hands down, social media has made a huge impact on my business. Instagram to be specific. I get majority if not all my clients from Instagram. There was a period of time that I did lose focus on my social media and the number of inquiries slowed down dramatically. I buckled down and took my social media account serious. Within the last month, I’ve gained over 20k followers organically and established myself as a respected artist and educator in the industry. Creating an online presence will help you be more credible and trustworthy for future clientele. Speaking for myself, whenever I am in search for a service, specifically a beauty service, I search them on Instagram. I can see what their brand represents, their portfolio of work, and who is behind the account. You just can’t get that kind of content from a google search.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I wouldn’t have made it this far without the support from my husband. He encouraged me to pursue my passion and he became fully involved and has become my business partner. It has truly been an amazing experience navigating through the adversity and success together. We are both on the same page and have the same vision for the business, which makes it so rewarding being able to work together. When we reach milestones, it’s a great feeling because we know we did it together.
