We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christina Briggs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I am self taught and did tons of research prior to and since becoming a soap maker. While you can do lots of reading I personally learn best hands on. So I did a lot of experimenting with different recipes and ingredients. Essential skills for me are a basic understanding of chemistry and math. I’m constantly learning new techniques and experimenting with designs.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started making soap 6 years ago and have expanded to include bath, body, hair and skincare products. As a mom of 3 I wanted a more hands on approach to the products my family was using with the goal to eliminate single use plastics from our bathrooms! 95% of the products I create are plant based- vegan (we use local beeswax in some skincare) all are cruelty free. Our vegan soap bars are cured for 4+ weeks to offer a long lasting product equivalent to 2-3 bottles of shower gel. All products are available online, in person at local retailers and at a variety of events. 2 years ago I began offering soap making classes to teach others to create their own soap.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Soap has become my artistic medium. While soap can be plain colored, I like to make it come alive with unique designs, color combinations, and corresponding scents to be a treat for the senses. This is truly my passion. While I often get “it’s too pretty to use” everyone deserves beautiful things. As a mom it’s often my way of “treating” myself! YOLO!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My original career path was teaching but I stopped to stay home with my children when they were young. So this is a completely different path than I could have ever imagined. I never really thought I was good at art until I found soap making. I’m so grateful for finding this creative outlet. I’m currently competing in a “soap challenge club” to showcase my designs
