We were lucky to catch up with Christina Bjorklund recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
Packaging has been our biggest obstacle and resulted in a lot of trial and error. We tried various jars and lids and some would leak or didn’t meet the look we were aiming for. We finally invested in aggressive seals for our products to prevent spillage. We also tried many packing boxes before we could determine the size we would need the most of. It’s been challenging but I feel like a packaging expert now!
Christina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Stina and I am a Registered Nurse who decided after the pandemic to go from “scrubs to scrubs”!
I’ve always made my own skin and bath products and it was a calling for me to share my knowledge of skin’s needs and create products everyone would love. Our products are plant-based, vegan and cruelty free. Our jars are also recyclable. We use no sulfates or parabens. We infuse color and different shapes into our products to engage the inner child in all of us!
We love music and pop culture and this is shown through our product names. From Freak On A Peach to Sage Against The Machine, we have the names to make you sing during your shower or bath routine!
We carry a full line of body scrubs, bath bombs, face and lip products, bubble bars (sudsy rolls), skin butters, deodorants and more!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Rx Skin & Bath amassed about 10k followers across the social media platforms in one year. We did this by posting consistently, asking our audience what they wanted to see more of and keeping it colorful and like eye candy for all ages. For example, people love to watch orders being packed and bath bombs being made! This was a bit of a surprise and at times it can feel violating as you are sharing your workspace with the universe!
Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
In 2008, I owned a smoothie franchise named Squeeze. This was my first brick and mortar and I was in nursing school during our entire time open and had a toddler! It was a grueling time but so much fun getting our community healthy! We sadly had to close our doors due to the recession but I learned so much about opening and operating a business. My biggest takeaway was that I would never want to own a restaurant that is open all day!
