We were lucky to catch up with Christin Webb recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christin, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I have always signed up, right on the dotted line; put my name in the hat or raised my hand to participate in a learning experience. The nerd in me has always appreciated learning. Heck, the animal that resonates most with me is an owl. You ask why? Owls are often known for their representation of wisdom. I love the under and overtones of wisdom. I love even more seeing wisdom play out in real life, impacting life in its most prized ability. From an early age, I have always attended a class; workshop; course; seminar; whatever you want to call it. Whether by force or choice, I have always and still enjoy learning, deciphering, analyzing and more. I enjoy the way one can learn from others in instructed or facilitated environments.
In 2015, I remember sitting in a 2-day, leadership workshop hosted by, my then, employer’s training department. It was not the first I had ever participated, but it was the first time I realized I wanted to do what the facilitator was doing. I wanted to share information. I wanted to learn from others in the same moments of sharing. Sharing information translates to having the ability to impart wisdom. It was my ah-ha moment of identifying something I wanted to achieve on a more grandeur scale than those I had done before. I was not sure how at the time, but the moment always remained with me.
In 2018, I left a company after over a decade of public service. I wanted a change of pace and wanted to explore working in the private industry. I also started toying with the idea of starting the company after another ah-ha moment. While starting my new job in the private industry. I was approached by three different employees on different teams reach out to me for confidence coaching. I was stunned of their trust to ask me, but most importantly they were the requests I needed.
Fast forward months later, I decided to start a leadership training and development company, The Greater You Leadership Series, LLC. It came after a process of praying, planning, and planning some more. I launched my first course, Confidence In Reach; a four-week, interactive, leadership class focused on the impact confidence on effective leadership. It went well and a spark to continue happened.
I created a business plan, defining the goals for the following two years. The first two years were more about sharpening my facilitator and instructional design skills. I maximized my resources utilizing virtual services by reaching audiences across the nation. I presented on topics including the foundations of leadership, leading during crisis, change management, time management, and the relationship between confidence & leadership. I launched a podcast, Lead the Way Wednesdays and eventually curated an online community for women leaders, Women Leaders Walk the Talk. It includes online panel discussions, events, conferences, training, and community forums.
Three and a half years later, we have four, fully, instructionally designed courses, an active online community for women leaders, opportunities for speaking engagements and available presentations for individuals, teams, and organizations. The Greater You Leadership Series, LLC trains on leaders that build the leader from the inside out.
I have learned the power of good and consistent content both online and offline. I understand the value in solidifying business structure early on. I overstate the importance of embracing the undesirable just as much as embracing the desirable. Be willing to envision alone; create alone; execute alone; measure alone; regroup and restart alone. This is the case even when there is a room full of people present to help. Embrace their help but know where the responsibility starts and stops with your dreams; your mission; your purpose. You.
Christin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Christin Webb, owner of The Greater You Leadership Series, LLC. I consider myself a leadership enthusiast teaching and consulting on leadership through various platforms – workshops, courses, coaching, online panel discussions, podcasts, conferences, special events, and more. I have a passion for leadership because I understand it to be the core reasons for success or the lack thereof.
I help clients learn how to tap into key leadership skills to translate to successful outcomes individually, organizationally, and more. Our unique approach to interactivity and the core focuses of self-awareness, accountability, effective communication, and servant leadership foster intuitive plans of action for enhanced leadership skills.
I am most proud of our special initiative for women leaders, titled Women Leaders Walk the Talk. It is an online community of over 500 women leaders. We host online discussions and curated online and in-person events for women leaders to connect, collaborate, and empower.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
TGYLS’ clientele has grown in an organic way based on consistent online content and presence. Even once I work with a client/agency, my social media follows or captures it in some way. In most instances, it has led to new customers who have seen the online engagement. One customer may see my work in a peer’s organization, inquire with them about their experience and then reach out to me directly for consultation and next steps.
Consistency is key. I have always intertwined social media in my strategy for growth, but historically was not as consistent. Being able to show a story of my work has been the best strategy so far.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Like most business owners, the pandemic required pivoting. Having started my business a year prior to the pandemic, the structure was established around in-person engagement only. The pandemic forced me to rethink the method in which I offered content to clients. Zoom became my company’s best friend with the inclusion of other online platforms and apps that enhanced an online experience and made the content accessible to the masses. The pandemic actually helped the company reach a larger audience and the connection has lasted well into today. Today, we offer both in-person and online content for local and global audiences.
