We recently connected with Christie Weichsel and have shared our conversation below.
Christie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
Reflecting on my journey in interior design, one transformative experience stands out that profoundly influenced my approach as a business owner. Early in my career, I was tasked with redesigning a historic Victorian townhouse for a client with a deep appreciation for both traditional aesthetics and modern functionality.
Eager to impress, I initially focused on infusing the space with modern and innovative design elements, aiming to blend the old with the new seamlessly. However, as the project progressed, I noticed the client growing increasingly anxious. Despite my creative efforts, something was amiss.
Recognizing the need for a course correction, I initiated an open dialogue with the client. Through our conversation, I realized that while I had been concentrating on the design’s visual impact, I had overlooked the client’s emotional connection to the space. They cherished the home’s original character and were apprehensive about losing its essence amidst the renovations.
This realization was pivotal. I shifted my approach to prioritize the preservation of the home’s historical features, integrating modern amenities in a way that honored its legacy. By actively listening and aligning the design with the client’s emotional needs, we transformed the townhouse into a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary comfort.
This experience taught me that successful interior design extends beyond aesthetics; it’s about understanding and valuing the client’s personal connection to their space. As a business owner, I now emphasize the importance of empathy and active listening, ensuring that our designs resonate deeply with our clients’ identities and histories. This client-centered approach has become a cornerstone of my business philosophy, fostering trust and delivering truly personalized design solutions.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My professional journey began in the fashion industry. After graduating from college, I relocated to Hong Kong to design shoes and handbags. This was a time before cell phones and the internet, and after four years, I found myself longing for home. Returning to Dallas, I secured a position designing belts and accessories for JC Penney. When the company I worked for closed its doors, I saw an opportunity to pivot toward my true passion: interior design. Even as a child, I would frequently rearrange the furniture in our home, keeping my mother guessing about what she would come home to next. Transitioning from fashion to interior design, I launched my career by collaborating with friends as my initial clients. Through dedication and a focus on personalized service, my business expanded organically via word-of-mouth referrals. This experience underscores the importance of building strong client relationships and delivering exceptional results to foster business growth.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Relocating to diverse communities such as Crested Butte, Vail, and Santa Fe has presented both challenges and opportunities in rebuilding my client base from the ground up. Central to my approach has been a commitment to community engagement through volunteering. This involvement not only fosters personal fulfillment but also organically cultivates professional relationships, reinforcing the adage that the more you give, the more you receive.
