We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christie Edwards. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christie below.
Alright, Christie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started my apothecary nearly 3 years ago which was born out of my love for working with herbs. Rewind to 2001 when I had my son. Not soon after he was born I noticed he had some issues with his skin. When I took him to his pediatrician, it was recommended I start him on steroids to help provide comfort with his skin issues. As a nervous new parent, I was not comfortable putting my newborn on steroids, so I opted out of the pediatrician’s recommendation and determined to take things into my own hands. I spent hours of countless research. This was before Google was available and the internet was widely available. I went to my local library in the city and spent a great amount of time in health food stores figuring what would work for my son.
I came across Calendula and decided to work with this herb to help with my son’s eczema. I tossed out my son’s soap, powder, lotions, and creams and replaced it with my homemade versions. After a few weeks, I noticed his skin improving and his level of discomfort improved tremendously. My son is now 22 years old and hasn’t had issues with his eczema since he was an infant. Over the years, I continued to make products and I decided to start my small business, Sage House Apothecary. It took me over 10 years to finally pull the trigger and officially register my business and launch. I knew I wanted to work with herbs formally so I decided to enroll in an herbal school to formalize my training. I studied herbs for 8 years while I lived in New York City, which is where my son was born. I know there are many people who are struggling with skin conditions so my business focuses on herbal infused products for the body, mind and spirit. As a Reiki Master, my clients often have needs that could benefit from the medicine in plants so I wanted to be able to offer a wholistic approach to healing. All of my products are Reiki charge by me so they are infused with healing energy my customers benefit from.
As I continue to build my brand, I am well aware there are many small businesses out there that do what I do but there are a few things I believe set my products apart from other products. I am an herbalist who make herbal products. Many of the companies working with herbal products, are not herbalists. In addition, I don’t see many businesses Reiki charging their products which I think is novel and unique.
What gets me most excited about Sage House Apothecary is my ability to create. I am a creator at heart. A retired professional dancer, with very little opportunity to hone my creativity so working with herbs has fulfilled my desire to create fully.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a teen, I became aware of my intuitive gifts, but neglected to fully accept them until my 40s. Since 2006, I worked with a healer from Hawaii. After facing several challenging life lessons and two divorces, I finally understood the power of self-acceptance and self-love through my healing journey, which has became the foundation of my work and with my clients. As I began to shift my perspective from that of a victim in my healing journey I wanted to share what I was learning in the hopes of helping others, so I founded and became the Co-creator of the podcast, Two Queens and Crystal Things where we talk all things spirituality.
I was drawn to start my energetic practice by receiving my Crystal Healing certification through Hibiscus Moons’ Crystal Academy. After completing my certification as a Crystal Healer Practitioner, I received my certification in Angelic Reiki in 2020 and my Angelic Reiki Master Teacher certification in 2021 through 5th Element Healing Center in Lake Tahoe, CA with Evon Eisenberg and Marianne Schneider. In 2021, I felt called to study sound healing and received both my level 1 & 2 certifications from The Center of Sound in St. Louis, MO led by Pati Pellerito.
Blending my Crystal Healing training with my sound and Reiki training, I developed my own unique healing practice utilizing the modalities of which I trained.
My mission is to help heal and hold space for others, as they come into who they are destined to become. This mission is the basis of a book I’m writing called, Getting Back to Me, which chronicles my life’s journey back to self. I also use one-on-one mentoring to help my clients cultivate a way of living based-off of ease and vibration allowing them to attract the type of life, relationships, success, and happiness they deserve.
In addition to working directly with my clients, I recently opened myself to the prospect of a motivational and keynote speaker to inspire by sharing her life experiences of overcoming past trauma, and proving you can transform your life for the positive. My belief is “healed people, heal people,” so I continue to work on myself on regularly digging into the shadows we often don’t have the desire to dig into.
Because I’ve worked with herbs for so long I decided to return to a program to enhance the knowledge I’ve learned over the years to support my vision for Sage House Apothecary.
What I am most proud of is my courage. Being accountable for the highs and lows of your life takes a lot of courage and mastery of self. I am proud of my continued work on myself which allows me to better serve as a practitioner.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have been building my audience on social media organically. As a previous blogger, I learned how to connect with my audience through story telling and relatable content. My personal page has the followers it has from my blogging days. When I started Sage House Apothecary I started from zero and leverage my audience from my personal page to grow my business page. I am still growing both pages but have seen the most growth occur based on my consistency and content. I think it’s important to post content you genuinely feel connected to. Otherwise, if you are posting just to post your audience will pick up on your inability to be authentic which has great potential to hurt your growth. There are many tricks and tools people use to “grow” their page to 10’s of thousands but I want to ensure my growth is organic and comes from posts and content I find meaningful, not posting just to fill up space or to check the box off. This can be challenging at times, but I do make this a priority.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is that it’s too late to…..fill in the blank. These days it is never too late to discover your voice, to find your passion or to try something new. I find myself constantly reinventing myself and allowing myself the freedom to explore. Your journey is your journey, so if your path takes you a little longer than the next person that’s perfectly okay. Everything happens in divine timing so it is never too late. I learned this in my healing journey of discovering self and realized in order for me to follow my passion and truly explore all aspects of myself I needed to be free to try new things and follow my passion like launching my business in my mid-40s.
