The story of how I came up with the idea for my natural hair and skin care business is rooted in my personal journey and frustrations. For years, I struggled with the adverse effects of chemical-laden hair products. My hair would become brittle, break easily, and lose its natural luster. Like many others, I had used relaxer straightens, which not only damaged my hair but also had alarming links to various cancers. The realization that I was exposing myself to harmful chemicals in the quest for manageable hair was disheartening and scary.
Fed up with the cycle of damage and risk, I decided to take a natural approach. I wanted to create a solution that would not only nourish my hair but also eliminate the health risks associated with chemical products. This decision was driven by a deep desire to prioritize my health and well-being.
I began researching the properties of natural ingredients and their benefits for hair and skin. I experimented with different formulations, tweaking and refining until I found the perfect blend that worked wonders for my hair. When I started using my own products, the transformation was remarkable. My hair became stronger, healthier, and more vibrant. It was a revelation.

For those who may not have read about me before, let me introduce myself. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Kent State University. During my college years, I did hair on the side to make extra money, which fueled my long-standing love for hair care and the beauty industry. After graduating, I entered the workforce in finance and insurance, gaining valuable experience. Additionally, I am an Ohio Licensed Real Estate Agent and a licensed braider.
My passion for hair care, combined with my background in marketing, led me to create a line of all-natural hair and skin care products. My company offers a range of products designed to nourish and enhance hair and skin without harmful chemicals. Our products address common problems such as dryness, brittleness, and breakage, especially for those with textured hair.
What sets us apart is our commitment to natural ingredients and our dedication to community support. We donate to women’s shelters and homeless shelters, and we host natural hair workshops to educate people on caring for textured hair and the benefits of natural ingredients.
I am most proud of the positive impact my products have on people’s lives and the support we provide to our community. Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A significant lesson I had to unlearn was the conventional approach to hair care that I was taught from a young age. Growing up, I was encouraged to use harsh chemicals and damaging techniques to manage my hair. These methods, though widely accepted, led to brittle, unhealthy hair and posed health risks, such as the potential link between relaxers and cancer.
The backstory to this transformation began when I decided to shift towards a natural approach to hair care. Realizing the damage these chemicals were causing, I knew I needed to change my routine completely. This required me to unlearn everything I knew about hair care, a process that was both challenging and enlightening.
I turned to entrepreneur books to educate myself on building a business that aligned with my new values. These books provided insights into creating a sustainable and ethical business model. Additionally, I sought out community free resource programs to sharpen my skills. These programs were invaluable in helping me understand the science behind natural ingredients and effective hair care techniques.
Through this journey, I developed a line of all-natural hair and skin care products that not only promote healthier hair but also educate others on the benefits of natural ingredients. This unlearning process taught me the importance of questioning established norms and seeking healthier alternatives, a lesson that has shaped my business and my approach to life.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Funding my business began with a modest but determined start. With just $500, I took a leap of faith and invested in the essentials needed to bring my vision to life. I purchased raw materials and ingredients, a handheld mixer, jars, bottles, and labels. These basic tools were the foundation of my business.
I started small, meticulously crafting each product by hand. As I began to make sales, I reinvested every dollar of profit back into the business. This self-funding approach allowed me to gradually expand my product line and improve my production processes without taking on debt or external investment.
Our business has thrived on this model of reinvesting profits, allowing us to grow sustainably. However, we recognize that to reach the next level, we need additional capital. We are currently exploring options to raise funds, aiming to expand our operations, increase production capacity, and reach a broader market. This next step is crucial for scaling our business and continuing to provide high-quality, natural hair and skin care products to our growing customer base.
