We were lucky to catch up with Christian Wilhelm recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, appreciate you joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
The idea of CJ Media came up during the Covid 19 pandemic. My cousin owns a successful BBQ restaurant and he needed help with a stronger online presence while he focused on keeping his business afloat during that difficult time. He let me run his social media pages, I designed his menus and even helped him setup his new online ordering app. My contributions were successful in generating business and he looked at me like, “Christian, as a small business owner, I can promise you this is the type of work we all need, but dont have the time for. Even if we do find the time, theres almost something more important we need to attend to. You’re clearly very good at this and should look into doing this full time. I mean think about it, 4-5 local businesses paying you $500 a month, thats great income!” I was hooked on the idea and immediately started pitching CJ Media to other businesses around Las Vegas. After a couple months I had 4-5 steady clients looking to me for their social media work. Its been very gratifying knowing people trust me to market for their business, i discovered this is what I love to do and what is what I wished to pursue full time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
It all started back in college. I went to the University of Colorado – Boulder originally pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, only to quickly realize this wasn’t for me. At the same time I found myself excelling in all of my elective courses centered on writing. My professors have always told me that I am a strong writer, always raising great questions and providing powerful ideas. Thats when i realized i wanted to create content that enticed people to react emotionally or physically.
Since graduating from CU I moved back to Las Vegas and took up a few marketing jobs, as that allowed me to expand on both my abilities as a copywriter as well as a designer. I did this for about five years until the pandemic happened which led to the creation of CJ Media.
As far as biggest struggles for this type. of business goes, I would say the number one thing would be finding clients that need the work, but also are accepting of the costs that come with having this content made for them. A lot of people want this type of work, but they don’t want to pay for it. Then, they pay for it and expect their following to sky rocket over night. People need to understand that a large, organic following will take time. Sure, you can pay for followers, but its typically pretty obvious when you do, discrediting your credibility and ruining your algorithm to attract the audience you want for your business.
It was also difficult in the beginning to market your business for clients.. when you don’t have any clients, finding yourself in this catch 22 was hard to get through, but luckily for me I was able to kick off CJ Media marketing my cousins restaurant, plus during that time, people were desperate for my field of work.
Speaking of my field of work. the services I provide include, but aren’t limited to
copywriting
graphic design
social media management
website design
newsletters
logos
photography
& more!
I’m proud to offer these kind of services as it’s helped people bring their brands to life and help bring them business. Its gratifying to know people trust me with their brand to where they’ll let me run their social media pages and its been fun to get an in depth look of so many different kinds of businesses. One day I’ll be working on content for a restaurant, the next day it’ll be marketing for an organic honey company. The work here is highly versatile and has made for a great portfolio. I love that people love my work, and I love what I do.
I want potential new clients to know that I care for their business as if it were my own. I’ve witnessed the struggles that businesses have had since the pandemic, so when people look to me to boost their social media presence I take it as a great honor and will ensure the customer they’ll get exactly what they’re looking for.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
since 2020, CJ Media has helped over 20 local businesses establish a stronger online presence and increase their revenue. I wish to see how far I can take this. Right now my current goal is to double the clientele in half the time. Now that I have an expansive portfolio I believe I’ll be able to exceed that goal.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
That would easily be my ability to provide professional work to my clients in a timely manner, and for an affordable price. Chances are if you need a full online package (logo, website, graphics, etc.) you need to gather everything quickly and on a budget. I can provide clients their full creative package in about a week, and that makes clients pretty happy. Then, they tell their family and friends about my ability to do that, creating a domino effect of new clientele submitting consultations on my website because of my reputation to accomplish professional work quickly. I believe thats a difficult task to accomplish as a creative, especially in a position like my own where you’re not focused on one niche market, but multiple markets.
