We recently connected with Christian Warren FREED and have shared our conversation below.
Christian Warren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story of how you went from this being just an idea to making it into something real.
It all started for me back in the late 70s when I was still little. My dad took me to see the Original Star Wars and then the animated Lord of the Rings movie. At just 4 yrs old I was thrilled and hooked. I started dabbling with goofy comics and stories, wound up winning the student of the month award in 10th grade for a very bad horror novel, and went off to join the Army. I wrote a few more books in spare time in the 90s before deploying to Afghanistan in 2002. There I wrote my first major novel and quickly followed it with another the next year while i was in Baghdad. It wasn’t until I got ready to retire I knew what I wanted to do.
So I began writing in earnest. I went through a string of small publishers before the VA was kind enough to send me back to college where I earned a MA in digital communications with the intent of turning my books into a business. I invested in myself, created my own label, watched and learned. Today I have almost 40 books published and my business continue to grow.
A nice pension and military disability means I don’t need to use my writing for a living but the goal is to attain the same level as some of the heavy hitters in my world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born in Buffalo, N.Y. more years ago than he would like to remember. After spending more than 20 years in the active-duty US Army i turned my talents to writing. Since retiring, I have published over 30 military fantasy and science fiction novels, as well as his memoirs from his time in Iraq and Afghanistan, a children’s book, and a pair of how to books focused on indie authors and the decision-making process for writing a book and what happens after it is published.
My first published book (Hammers in the Wind) has been the #1 free book on Kindle 4 times and I holds a fancy certificate from the L Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest. Ok, so it was for 4th place in one quarter, but it’s still recognition from the largest fiction writing contest in the world. And no, I’m not a scientologist.
Passionate about history, he combines his knowledge of the past with modern military tactics to create an engaging, quasi-realistic world for the readers. He graduated from Campbell University with a degree in history and a Masters of Arts degree in Digital Communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
I currently live outside of Raleigh, N.C. and devote my time to writing, family, and our two Bernese Mountain Dogs. If you drive by you might just find me on the porch with a cigar in one hand and a pen in the other.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
It took me a minute to figure it out. At first I tried using social media to find readers but with the ever shifting algorithms and fast paced nature of a post it became apparent I needed more. So I focused on building my mailing list and fine tuning my weekly presentation to get the most ROI. I have driven sales and a following thru my website and directing traffic to Amazon for those subscribing to Kindle Unlimited.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Hand down, the most rewarding aspect of what I do is arriving at an event and seeing people who knew I was coming and were eager to get another signed copy of one of my books. This is what makes it all worthwhile. The joy in knowing I helped someone forget about reality for a few hours or days. What more could a guy ask for?
