We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christian Sturt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christian below.
Christian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I started Queen City Disc because I love the sport of disc golf and the community that can be created around it. I had a great group of friends that I would go out and play rounds with and I quickly noticed that there was such a fun and engaging dynamic being created with everyone in group that I had to start finding some way to capture it. I had previous experience with recording videos and editing so I began brining a tri-pod and recording videos on my iPhone during our rounds. I would soon create a media platform with the goal of showcasing both the highs and the relatable lows of disc golf. I noticed that a majority of the media platforms in disc golf already really never showcased the more relatable, amateur side of disc golf. It was typically only highlights. I began posting a mix of everything and with this unique dynamic between our group as well as very clean and smooth edits to the videos, Queen City Disc was able to stand out amongst the various disc golf content creators. Within a year of its existence, the page had multiple videos gain viral exposure brining incredible interaction to the page allowing us to swifty pass 10,000 followers. These videos that were hitting viral potentional all circulated around the fact that people were seeing how much fun our group was having playing disc golf, throwing both good shots and terrible shots. People wanted to be a part of it. A dedicated community started growing and soon, bigger companies started to take notice. We began getting contacted by various disc golf companies as well as outdoor clothing companies to see if we would be intersted in representing their products in our videos. Today, we are still growing very steadily and are approaching 40,000 followers while also being able to reach millions of viewers consistently every month. I really never expected the page to get this big so quickly. However, I knew if I consistently posted quality content of our group and it got in front of the right people, it had the potential to create an incredible community which is what is currently happening right now.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Christian Sturt and I am the founder and head of Queen City Disc. We are a disc golf group of content creators out of Charlotte, NC called Queen City Disc. We make videos with the goal to share both the joys and dreads of this beautiful game that we play called disc golf. Though highlights in sports can be amazing to watch, we also enjoy putting content that is more relatable to the masses. Our group has a very energetic and engaging dynamic which we try to capture in our videos. We’ve had multiple videos reach viral exposure and have amassed almost 40,000 followers within two years of being in existence. It is our goal to share just how much fun disc golf is as a sport and the incredible community that can be created within it. We want to urge as many people who have never played the sport to give it a try and get involved.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For content creation, the most rewarding aspect is when you find your niche that is unqiue to yourself or your brand and it is receieved well by the general public. I spent years creating videos that I enjoyed watching but just don’t get the same reaction when posted to social media. So, you reevaulate your work and try different templates/formats until you stumble upon something that works. I posted so many videos trying out different ideas until I stumble upon a format that people really enjoyed.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I knew within disc golf, there weren’t many social media platforms that had a whole group of people making videos. This dynamic of the group playing disc golf and the many different skill levels that varied throughout created really fun and engaging videos on our page that disc golf fans really had never seen before. Our group and the energy that was being created in the videos was unique to us. No one else could replicate it. Once I noticed that this is what set us apart, I began to center our videos around it and people loved it. It grew to capture the attention of both disc golfers as well as outdoor sports fans outside of disc golf.
