We were lucky to catch up with Christian Robbie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Edith Wharton taught everything I know when it comes to being a writer. Wharton’s novels on New York Society, with their lush descriptions of social etiquette and interior design, helped me hone in on the details that make the page come alive for the reader. My twin passions for architecture and writing wouldn’t be what they are today without her guidance. And, yet, reading alone didn’t make a writer, writing did, and I absolutely recommend writing, writing, writing! It takes patience, persistence, and determination to be a writer, and it is a writer’s job to learn how to keep that tenacity and spark alive.
Christian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my Instagram, Robbie Adobe, in 2018 as a place where I could celebrate California’s unique architectural heritage. As a freelance writer, this gave me a place to showcase my work while also connecting with the architecture and design communities. Through my blog and working with clients, I’ve been able to craft and hone my social media, blogging, and newsletter skills to share content that not only inspires me, but also resonates with the reader. When anyone lands on my Instagram or reads my work, I want them to be engaged, to be immersed in a world of new ideas and curated design inspirations, all anchored by historical research.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, my favorite phrase to hear is, “No edits needed,” it’s like music o my ears. I love being able to connect with people through my work, and being able to share their voice, viewpoint, or personal style through writing. I’ve always been called a very cinematic writer because I love to envelope the reader in my world.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My social media audience is based in the architecture, design, and real estate communities. As a first step in developing a social media following, I’d recommend finding your niche and going full steam ahead! I’m a big fan of creating a calendar of content to make it easy for me to keep a regular posting schedule. I’d also recommend considering creating highly shareable content that your community can share to further expand your reach. Once you’ve found your content, voice, and calendar, the social media world can be your oyster.
