We were lucky to catch up with Christian Richardson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents have been great at giving me the space and peace of mind to purse my own ambitions. They’ve told me my entire life that no matter what I get into, I can succeed. My father gives me my confidence, and my mother gives me my exuberance. I do not wish to think where I would be today if it were not for everything they sacrificed and did to get me to this place.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
These days I spend my time writing, directing, and editing. Growing up I was fascinated by all three aspects of the filmmaking process in different ways. I was always told as I grew older I would need to pick a specific path of my interests so I could specialize. I said to hell with that and have made a practice of developing all three aspects together.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
How fucking hard it is to lay it all out there. How hard it is to spend months building up a project or idea that excited you, despite all who don’t understand what you’re going for. It’s so incredibly draining from my soul after a period of creative melting. I feel worn out and spent.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I cannot describe the feeling of having a vision for weeks, months, years; pulling all the strings possible to bring it to life, then to finally sit back and see it. I couldn’t care if nobody else saw it or liked it, from that moment on my job is finished, my heart is filled.
