We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christian Ramirez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christian , appreciate you joining us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Two lessons were ingrained in me by my parents growing up. My mom is pure and has always led with her heart, my dad taught me the nothing is impossible . When you put this things together you get someone that has lost the fear of the unknown because whatever that is there will always be a way to solve it or work with it. Additionally, doing everything with your heart on your sleeve and treating everyone with love and kindness will forever be more rewarding than any major achievement . They taught me to not be afraid and to do it all with love.

Christian , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Christian Ramirez. I was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States at the age of five. As a DACA recipient and lifelong creative, I have spent the last 14 years pursuing my passion through creative entrepreneurship and community-focused projects.
I began my journey as a photographer and videographer shortly after high school, where I learned the fundamentals of storytelling, visual communication, and creative direction. From there, I explored a wide range of creative ventures, including documentary filmmaking, clothing brands, podcasting, paint-and-sip events, marketing, and countless other projects that allowed me to grow as both an artist and entrepreneur.
The last four years have been especially transformative. During that time, I worked for a large arts-based nonprofit organization, helping produce festivals, exhibitions, and community programs that served thousands of residents. That experience deepened my understanding of the power of arts and culture to bring people together while also revealing a significant need in our community: a dedicated space where artists who are ready to take the next step in their careers can develop their practice, take creative risks, and grow alongside other creatives.
That realization led me to create Chapter 30 Creative Studios, an independent creative business . Chapter 30 was founded to bring new energy to Oxnard’s already thriving arts scene by providing affordable studio space, professional opportunities, and a supportive environment where artists can challenge themselves, build sustainable creative careers, and contribute to the cultural growth of our city.
At its core, Chapter 30 is built on a simple belief: we cannot allow the fear of starting something new to dictate what is possible. Our goal is to build as if a blueprint already exists, even when we are creating it as we go. We encourage artists to see themselves not only as creatives, but as business owners. Talent and passion are important, but sustainability comes from understanding how to build a career around your work.
We want every artist who joins our studio community to have the long-term goal of becoming a full-time artist. It is not easy, but it is achievable. If someone else has done it before, there is no reason why the next generation of artists cannot do it as well. Through mentorship, collaboration, exhibitions, and professional development opportunities, we help artists move closer to that reality.
While Chapter 30 is still in its infancy, the impact has already been significant. In just nine months of operation, we have hosted multiple exhibitions, artist showcases, pop-up events, workshops, art classes, and community gatherings that have connected artists with new audiences and opportunities. We have organized field trips that expose artists to larger creative ecosystems, fostered collaborations between local creatives, and created meaningful opportunities for artists to share, sell, and discuss their work. These early accomplishments demonstrate both the demand for spaces like Chapter 30 and the potential for what can be achieved when artists are given the resources and support to grow.
Beyond supporting artists within our walls, Chapter 30 is committed to creating opportunities outside of Oxnard. We do this by bringing accomplished creatives into our community to share their skills and experiences, while also building partnerships that connect local artists to larger audiences, new markets, and collaborative projects. We believe that by creating together, we move closer to the shared goal of making a living through art.
Additionally, Chapter 30 provides art placement and curation services for businesses, offices, restaurants, and public spaces. We specialize in transforming environments that might otherwise feel ordinary by incorporating meaningful artwork that creates a healthier, more inspiring, and more enjoyable experience for those who use the space. Simply put, if you have a wall, we can help fill it with art that brings life, character, and connection to the people around it.
Chapter 30 is more than a studio building. It is an ongoing experiment in what becomes possible when artists are encouraged to think bigger, take calculated risks, and build sustainable careers around their creativity. Our mission is to help artists create the future they want to live in rather than waiting for someone else to create it for them.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media growth is an interesting challenge. Some accounts go from 0 to 10,000 followers in their first weeks, while others take years to reach 1,000.
At Chapter 30, we’ve focused on storytelling and showing people what is happening inside the space. Rather than relying solely on flyers, which, unfortunately, are still necessary, we prioritize people-centered content that highlights the artists, visitors, and community that make this place special.
We’ve found that this approach creates more authentic engagement. People aren’t just enjoying our posts because they’re fun; they’re connecting with them because they see themselves reflected in the stories, experiences, and community we share.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Funding a new business is no joke, especially when you decide to go for it before you’re technically “ready.”
Chapter 30 was funded through four main sources: personal savings, loans from friends and financial institutions, cashing out vacation time from my day job, and the support of the first artists who believed in the vision and secured studio spaces early on.
I still work a full-time 9–5, and that has allowed me to grow the business slowly while giving myself a little breathing room. I’m sure there were cleaner, more traditional ways to put all of this together, but part of the excitement for me is building the boat while already out on the water.
That said, the risks were calculated. I knew how far I could realistically stretch myself without completely falling apart.
The art world is not an industry most people view as highly profitable, and the timeline to balance the budget may be longer than it would be for many traditional businesses. But if you keep chipping away at it, stay consistent, and lead with your heart, it becomes worth it.
Sometimes the path isn’t about being fully prepared. It’s about believing enough in the vision to start anyway.
