We recently connected with Christian Patterson and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can look like a bunch of different things. But to me, what it takes to be successful is your willingness to be dedicated. It takes true dedication to your own craft and true belief in what you’re doing to achieve success. There isn’t a time limit to achieve success. Eventually I know ill get to where I want to be because I truly believe in what I’m doing.
Christian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a cinematographer. I spend my time making worlds and scenarios in my head and I write them down. Whether the story is for animation or for real life, I have fun writing it out. Then I build a team to go out and shoot the story and make short films and pilot pitches. My goal is to have my own animated shows one day and to direct my dream movies. I love collaborating with my peers and other fellow filmmakers. I can write, edit, I have Grip experience, I can script supervise and I produce as well. Im most proud of the short films Ive gotten to shoot this year and the growth in my craft knowledge that Ive gained in the past year.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my Director of Photography and my mentor in college. I was taking over a lease of our mutual friend and we became roommates. I watched him wake up everyday and try to make something happen when at the time, I was not confident in myself or in life. We’ve became closer outside of being roommates and he’s taught me a lot of what I know today.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I use the funds from my day jobs to generate the money needed for each shoot. I have never made money off of the things I’ve made so it might seem like a waste. But I love the art that I make and I know that one day the money will come. To me, it’s about the quality of work that I produce more than anything. It’s also about trying new things. I hope to pitch to investors to try and make more art in the future.
