We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christian Mayfield a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
You have to have made up in your mind, no matter the risk you press forward to your dreams and goals.
Christian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, about me. That’s a loaded question. I’m simple yet complex. What I mean by that is I know exactly what I want and how I want it. Especially when it comes to projects I write and produce. It’s the intricate details once I’m doing the project that things can be complex because I get really detailed. As an actor it’s kind of the same. I identify the goal of the character and try to reach it. How I get to that goal again things become complex. I think the reason I operate that way is I believe everyone who watches me or my project should get something out of it, regardless of who they are. I’m hoping people see something in themselves. It’s simple to understand but with a variety of possibilities it makes things complex. I hope people who follow my work will see the light and the gift God has given and it helps them in some way.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Well I it was my 1st attempt to move to LA. I thought I had everything in place. I arrive in LA in 2007 and the person I was supposed to stay with was no where to be found. I had to check into a hotel room which I didn’t have a lot of funds for. I finally go in contact with them after 2 days. The following day I had a meeting with a manager. So everything is going well right? Well a few days after attaining a rep, Hollywood goes on strike due to the DGA. Then I wake up one morning and the person I’m staying with is bad mouthing me on the phone. So I had to leave there. Things went down hill fast. Had to return to Atlanta, with nothing I set to accomplish happened. It took me 7 years to return to LA, but when I did I was here to stay.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A big reason why I had to be resilient is because more than anything I wanted to show my kids, that if God gives you a gift, you can use it to live. That even in tough times as long as you believe that you and your gift have purpose you can pull through.
