We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christian Jacobs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christian, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Makeup and photography have always played a big part in my life. Growing up I would watch my mother do her makeup in the morning and she had this glow of confidence radiating off of her. I remember thinking “I want that for myself”. She would always tell me anywhere I go, always hold your head high and share your confidence. The older I got and with more practice and comfort, I did just that. After always getting compliments on my skin and makeup, I would think, “How can I make an impact in my community and those around me”? I would do a couple of my friends and family’s makeup and watched how much confidence they would have and how much happiness they projected out. I wanted to capture those moments. The process, the confidence, which all lead into photography! The meaning behind makeup for me is not a cover up, but self expression. Your own art! I wanted to create a space for individuals to build their confidence in life itself and know they are a piece of art to this world not a cover up.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up I would watch my mother and aunts do their makeup and I loved how natural and skin-like their makeup looked. Some days I could not tell if they had any on. From there I picked up a lot of products and tricks they used and incorporated it into my own. My mother taught me the importance of taking care of yourself. Inside and out. From having a healthy diet to washing my face regularly, I wanted to make sure I was not just teaching or showing individuals that you are only considered beautiful with makeup. I wanted to make sure they know that they are beautiful exactly how they were created. I gain some insights from one of my aunts who is an esthetician and an owner of a wax company located in Red Oak, Texas. She would show me different products such as fur oil, Obaji face wash and toner. I am big on sharing my success of clear skin to others, though I know my process may be different from theirs. I always inform clients that everyone’s skin is different. In order for you to achieve your look, you will defiantly have to be open into expanding your own skin care routine. I am not an individual who projects so much of what I use on my skin because my routine maybe different from someone else’s. I’m very open to help look for good products for different skin types for my clients. I allow them to know this is a team effort and we will work together to accomplish any skin type or look they want to accomplish. I am most proud of seeing others confidence glow in this world so that they maybe a light to another individual and share their insights on their journey to connect with other individuals on their skin and makeup journey.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that makeup is a cover up. In high school and a little throughout college I would always deny wearing makeup knowing I clearly have it on. I would use it to hide my true self. I am fortunate enough to have a great support system of friends and family who were always truthful and open with me but allowed me to do things on the comfort of my own time. One day everything just hit me and I told myself, “In order for me to be successful in what I do, I cannot cover up nor hide behind my truth”. From there I began to be truthful within myself which was shared within my friends, family and community. The more truthful I was about skin and makeup, the more opportunity and success came along with my makeup successes.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media now, is so filled with filters, photoshop and edits. For the most part, we all use them. I do! I wanted to make sure that my social media was more natural, unfiltered and raw. Just like my personality. With that I made sure I am the same person on and off social media. While meeting individuals and clients in public, I would receive compliments on my appearance but I wanted to make sure that was not all they seen when they see me. I am more than just my skin and makeup. I am confidence, genuine, a light to this world and so are others. With that, I created a space on social media for others to feel free and confident within themselves with no judgement. With a gallon of love, a cup of confidence and a dash of gentleness, it’s the perfect blend to create a beautiful safe space for my audience on social media.
