We recently connected with Christian Hirschi and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christian, thanks for joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
I have always been deeply rooted in family. One of the biggest reasons I decided to start my own business was so I could make my own schedule and spend as much time with my family as possible. In college, when I started my business it was a simpler task then it is now. It was just my wife and I and the business was small and we didn’t need much to survive. We had our first child around the same time I graduated college and this really kicked me into gear. The responsibility of being a father made my business essential. I wanted the time and I needed the funds for my family. I spent a lot of time before this figuring out what I would call the business. My grandfather was in the same industry. He passed away when I was graduating high school from a 2 year cancer battle. This had a huge impact on my life. Before he passed he taught me a few things about his industry and when I started college I decided to try it out myself. I had my grandpa, in spirit, supporting me; and I had so much of my family giving me so much help and advice. This is why I ultimately decided to name my company Generational Sales. It was a family name that we all had in common. A company inspired and aided by my ancestors in hopes of creating a bright future for my descendants. To better answer your question, this is what my parents did right. They gave me a high example, they didn’t just say their advice on life; they lived their advice. They taught me, they motivated me, and they lifted me up. They were there for me, I’ll always be appreciative of this and look towards doing the same for my posterity.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my business at a very young age. I had so much support from loved ones, especially my wife. Even with all this support you have to remember if you don’t work, the business won’t work either. So I put my head down slowly but surely painting the picture of Generational Sales. It was a picture that at the beginning I thought I had control of what it would look like, but you realize you need to evolve to where your being pushed. Originally I had a hard time finding my niche, I was trying a lot of categories of inventory but didn’t quite have a specialty yet. As time progressed and I continued to work and work, I found the business snowball had started to find its own direction. I found myself narrowed down to two niches between our online store and online auction house. Both have grown into a substantially sized commercial equipment and part store. We are able to offer thousands of high quality and sometimes hard to find items at incredible prices, while giving our customers the satisfaction in knowing what they are seeing in our listings is exactly what they are buying. We ship our items out lighting fast, putting high priority in getting our orders to our customers quickly so they can fulfill their jobs.
For our online auction house we are able to help businesses that are remodeling or relocating in selling off their no longer needed equipment and furniture. Getting great deals for both our clients and customers and ensuring good equipment can be put to good use rather than filling our land fills. It has been remarkable to see how the business has evolved and improved over time. I look forward to continuing to see how we are able to progress and move forward.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I said already that I started my business young, while I fell in love even younger. I was lucky enough to fall in love with my best friend and best teammate. My wife has had to hear every single thought about the business that has ever run through my head. She gives me such good insights and allows me to work out the thoughts in my head and try to turn them into reality. She is the one person I am able to truly share every ounce of success stories with. My wife is my right hand woman, When I need a second pair of hands she’s always there. Even when whatever we need to move is way too heavy, she gives it her all, and seriously she is super strong. She does what it takes. I couldn’t ask for a better teammate. I’ll tell you how we met, it was a small, little hot tub party. After we got out of the hot tub she asked me about my favorite hobby at the time, it was about the skateboard I rode over to her apartment. We talked about all our favorite activities and agreed on every single one. It was history from there.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When my business was still relatively new, I wasn’t 100% devoted to it. I was still in college and didn’t know for sure where life would take me. One financial topic I had interest in was the stocks. I had some money already in it to try to diversify my portfolio as we’re all taught. One year in particular, I got a little too into the stocks and put more money then I should have into it. I ended up losing a good amount of money and will forever remember the lesson of my first investment priority needs to be back into my business. Whenever I’ve had temptations to put a substantial amount of my money elsewhere I have to remind myself that. I’ve created a good business, why would I not put my money back into it to try to make it even better?
