We recently connected with Christian Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Talk to us about building your team? What was it like? What were some of the key challenges and what was your process like?
When I came to Savannah, there was a small group of dedicated coaches whose sole goal was to grow the sport in the area. The region was just starting to bud and in a town where word of mouth is everything, the word of mouth was starting to spread. I got very lucky.
Once we opened the store, Lowcountry Lacrosse Savannah, then we had a hub for people to find if they had just moved to the area and were looking for ways to get involved. It was easier to attract coaches; and we have the best! All of our coaches are dedicated to growing the game, and to molding young men and women to have strong character. We teach the game. and we teach it well, but we teach a whole lot more!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the owner of Lowcountry Lacrosse Savannah; a retail store for all individual and team lacrosse equipment in Savannah, GA. Through the store, we also run various youth programs year round. We have the Coastal Empire Recreational Program, Sweetlax Hawksbills boy’s and Savannah Gulls girl’s travel teams. We are committed to providing the best service at the best price for our retail goods, and growing the game of lacrosse in the greater Savannah area.
We have programs for all ages and skill levels throughout the year. You can find all of the programs we offer at our website: https://lowlaxlacrosse.com/events/savannah-events.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The most important piece to our reputation was the coaching staff we assembled. The programs we offer speak for themselves with the caliber of coaching our staff brings to each practice, game and season. We keep positivity at the heart of it, and with that comes our expertise, curriculum, techniques and passion. Beyond that, for myself personally, it was keeping integrity and humility as cornerstones for every decision I make. Being a Christian, I knew that if I practices business the same way I try to practice my life, with those values at the core, that I would be above the rest.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In high school, I didn’t want to be in business. I saw my father wake up and leave the house by 6am to catch a train into New York City and not get home until 7:30pm at night. I didn’t want that life; so I decided I would go into teaching. I received a Bachelors degree and then a Masters in education and started my teaching career in Denver, CO. However, after two years of substituting and one year of teaching, it was evident that that was not to be my path. I took the first job I could get, a door-to-door sales job for CenturyLink/DirecTV (also where I met my wife) and quit that job after four months, but I was good at it and never thought that I would be. After a little soul-searching I asked myself one question, “what industry do I want to be in?”; the answer was lacrosse. The rest is history!
