We were lucky to catch up with Christian Hanna recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christian , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking risks is extremely important. There is a saying, “there is nothing more dangerous than a man with nothing to loose”. If you live in Fear, it may lead you to living a life if regret.
One of the biggest risks i take with my everyday life is skateboarding. There is chance of injury, chance of arrest and chance of success in the sport. It involves the “streets” and as people know the “streets” are unforgiving. Also wanting a career out of a sport that has such an non promised path, leads to difficulty.
You have to risk money to travel to competition in order to make it in this sport. Also you have to risk money and time in the “streets” in order to gain respect through video parts and other exposure.
Overall, I believe taking a risk is a huge MUST in all peoples lives. If not… you will end up living a regretful life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a “Jack of all Trades” as some may say. Firstly I am a skateboarder who has traveled the world from Jamaica to California in competition and videography. I also make music as a primary way of expression to my fans of what is going on in my personal life. I do this hoping that someone may relate and find comfort in my words or at least understanding in my character. Along with these hobbies I do design clothing and host various skateboard competitions around the U.S.A via Sesame.wop.
Sesame is my Non-Profit organization dedicated to spreading positivity and overall “hype” in the skateboard community. We raise funds for breast cancer and mental health organizations, along with food for Homeless shelters and donation centers.
Overall I am just trying to leave my imprint on this world before I am inevitably gone.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Coming up as a skateboarder you are taught to believe that if you simply do the hardest tricks or film the best video part that you will go pro and all your worries will be solved. I had to unfortunately learn that this is not the case. While there are few pros who this is true for, it is not the “every pro” story. I learned that you have to take action to build your own personal name and empire up in order to be someone who remembered for years to come. Relying on sponsorship and people who are not YOU, is simply ignorant. You should view yourself as more important than any company that could sponsor you, while remaining humble and understanding opportunity and hand out.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My video parts. I believe I have the most video parts in Atlanta still to this day hahaha. While they may not all be the best, they show my growth and allowed people to follow my journey to where I am now.
