We were lucky to catch up with Christian Givens recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
The biggest challenge to profitability as a realtor would be ourselves. In some ways, we control how much we make by how much prospecting we do throughout the year. Low prospecting equals a low number of leads. High prospecting equals a higher lead count. It’s a numbers game so we have to always prospect. The ultimate goal is to eventually run my business off of referrals, but that takes time.
Christian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve promoted my Podcast, Faithful Christian. . From our previous conversation, I shared that the podcast was born from my desire to be reminded of the basic tenets of my faith and to encourage others to fall in love with God’s Word.
I also shared how the podcast has a goal to be a resource to encourage young Christians (18-39) to remain faithful to the teaching of the Bible. That’s still true, but currently, I am so behind on my recording schedule for season 3, but it is coming… eventually.
For this interview as you can tell from my first response, I want to focus on my bread-winning business, selling real estate. I have the privilege of serving the community through my work. I believe that stable housing is key to an individual’s ability to gain stability in all other areas of life. When we have stable housing we can then focus on other activities to help us grow whether it’s spiritually, mentally, or professionally.
I also believe that real estate is such a great tool to build wealth. Andrew Carnegie stated that 90% of millionaires are invested in Real Estate. It’s a stable investment that historically appreciates, even amid recessions. I’ve seen this investment class benefit my family and my goal is to help others have the same access that my family has had to this asset class.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
More recently I’ve been seeing some success for my real estate business in promoting myself on TikTok (Follow me on TikTok: ChristianGRealtor). I show up every day and I do my best to engage with everyone who engages with my content. I also love engaging with other content creators.
I try to make my content relatable for all types of people. There are a lot of realtors with great content but there is only one me and that’s the cool thing, I get the chance to show potential client’s who I am. With that being said, the key to TikTok beyond showing up every day is to show up as yourself and have fun. People appreciate it when I show up as myself and I’m finding that a lot of times rapport is built on the front end because of my TikTok videos.
Another resource for the business is past client referrals and friend/family referrals. There is no greater compliment of a job well done than a referral! I am so thankful for every referral I receive from current and past clients. And when family and friends support me, it gives me a confidence boost. Knowing I have them in my corner means the world to me.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn self-doubt and negative self-talk. This is a daily lesson for me, but one that I am seeing now as so essential for growth.
I used to be so hard on myself and speak down to myself for not being further along in my journey. Thankfully, I am right where I need to be in my journey. A huge source of these feelings was when I would compare myself to others. When I stopped focusing on other people’s journeys it freed up so much mental space.
My faith, my friends, and my family have been essential in my growth in this area. One, I believe I am nothing without God so that’s where the faith component comes in. Two, I believe that community is a gift from God, and my community always reminds me to speak life over myself and my situation. They are also some of my biggest cheerleaders and supporters. They remind me that on my bad days, I am not only wanted around but that my presence is needed by someone.
I spent several months depressed because of life circumstances and it stopped my productivity. My support system kept giving me a reason to get up and keep going. They helped to bring me back to some level of normalcy. Life is hard but when we have a solid support system, it makes the hard parts more bearable.
I am not where I want to be yet, but I am so much further along than I was this time last year and for that I am thankful. I hope that I can be an encouragement to other people who felt the same way. Keep going! I’m cheering you on!
