We were lucky to catch up with Christian Drake recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christian, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I attribute any great learning to the great mentors and teachers in one’s life.
Any success one has doesn’t really hold much significance without the trials that it took to get there. There is no timetable to success, and there is no way to speed up the process of understanding. Believe me I have tried. The best thing we can do is not stand in our own way of learning.
The most essential skill that I have learned about this work is that in order to have success you don’t actually have to be the best, but you need to never quit at what you do.
This may sound pretentious, but I feel as artists, the only obstacle standing in our way is ourselves. The limitations we put on ourselves, the fears we may have, or the lack of work we put into our craft. Once we overcome these personal grievances only then we can truly become the artist we are meant to be.
Christian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who don’t know me, I was a kid who grew up just outside of Las Vegas. I moved out here about 2.5 years ago with some money in my pocket and a dream. I have been making a life out here ever since.
My whole aim when I got out here was to get on sets, in any way possible as frequently as I could, to have a better understanding of how the field works. Because of this, I have had so many amazing people come into my life who I am forever grateful for.
For practicing my craft, I currently have a weekly class I attend, they are my Tribe. It’s a place where we can just experiment our craft as artists where there is no pride or misconceived notions about who we are. Everyone in there, no matter how much of a star, just sees themselves as a normal person in that space. It is something I love being a part of honestly.
My whole idea for what I want to achieve is pretty basic. I love acting and making movies, I want to inspire people from all walks of life, and I will use 100% of my brain to figure out how to do just that.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to be the best version of myself with passion, humility, and love for everything in this world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is a privilege to just do the things that terrify people. To jump off the cliff when others think you’re crazy. That is the beauty of what we get to offer the world. That is the reward.
