Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christian Covington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christian , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Anytime one goes beyond the systems and structures designed by society, they concurrently risk their reputation and comfort. I (she/her) identify as a Black, queer, woman who embraces authenticity and utilizes style and fashion to express it. Although I am comfortable expressing myself through fashion now, this was not always the case for me.
As a child, I never liked wearing dresses and skirts. I felt more comfortable and freer wearing my older brother’s baggy t-shirts and pants. As a young girl influenced by a gendered society, I felt confused as to why I preferred clothes that were not designed for me.
Once I was able to independently shop for myself, I explored the boys’ and men’s departments at clothing stores. A more masculine style of clothing was my preference; however, the shopping experience itself was unpleasant. People would often look confused or ask about who the clothes were for, and it never felt “right” to walk into the women’s dressing room with men’s clothing.
In addition to the discomfort, the clothes were always too big or too small. Nothing seemed to compliment both my body type and style. I wanted clothes that wouldn’t hug my curves yet were also complimentary to my physique.
After years of settling for clothes that weren’t quite me, I decided it was time to create my own clothing brand that embraces the style(s) of individuals who also desire to dress outside the gender binary. Because I followed my truth and risked being viewed outside of what society perceived as “normal,” I was able to embrace who I am and ultimately design a brand that focuses on creating that same experience for other people.
Christian , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I independently founded Mx. Clothing through hard work, persistence and saving (a lot) of money. I am proud that I persevered through the lengthy process of founding a business and continue to eliminate any barriers that attempt to deter my success. I continue to market my brand via social media, make appearances at pop-ups and local events, and build relationships with other business owners and organizations. My biggest accomplishment to date was manufacturing the first set of clothing in December of 2022, and receiving a vast network of support from family, friends, and new customers. Currently, we have four different colors of hoodie and jogger sets and are working on releasing our next clothing drop!
Mx. Clothing strives to create an environment for equitable collaboration. Mx. invites people of color, women, non-binary and LGBTQIA+ persons to cohesively create, model, and network within their communities. We hope to scale our brand to be able to provide economic and developmental opportunities for individuals who connect with our mission and vision of promoting gender freedom and self-expression.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Mx. Clothing was founded in Aurora, Colorado and has networked its way across the state. We currently have customers in Aurora, Denver, Loveland, Fort Collins, and more. Mx. Clothing values having a presence within communities and a large portion of business is conducted at local events and popups. In April, Mx. attended an event at the University of Denver; the event was hosted by a sorority to celebrate local businesses of color and multiculturalism.
I currently reside in Los Angeles, California where the event and pop-up schedule remains consistent. At least 2 to 3 times per month, I attend events to foster brand loyalty amongst a diverse clientele. More specifically, I vend at the Black Excellence Brunch which aims to create a safe space for Black entrepreneurs, artists, small businesses, and professionals to connect and empower one another. I have built many relationships with other Black vendors, and we consistently support each other every month through the execution of this event.
You can learn more about the happenings with Mx. Clothing through our monthly newsletter (subscribe at www.mxclothingllc.com) where we communicate with our followers each month to let them know about upcoming events, sales, and other exciting news!
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
My favorite marketing story was the release of our Fashion Journey blog. Biweekly, we release a new Fashion Journey blog on our website in which people can share their personal stories relating to fashion and reflect on how their style has evolved into what it is today. To date, we have posted 6 different peoples’ fashion journeys at https://www.mxclothingllc.com/blog. I enjoy this unique segment of our website because it allows me to learn more about our clientele. I have been able to read about our writers’ experiences with style and how it can change depending on which phase of life they are in. Additionally, I have been able to understand more about peoples’ cultures, gender identities and relationships with fashion. Everyone’s approach of expressing themselves through how they look is different and oftentimes one’s sense of style can reflect certain aspects of their identity. We invite anyone to write a blog post about their own fashion journey so we can share a diverse ray of perspectives.
