Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christia May Alega. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christia May, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
After much deliberation, I decided to name my company PIC_CHA because it represents my personality and creativity. Also, PIC_CHA relates to the word “picture”, as well as my name. At first, I was going to stick to the common photography names like Christia Alega Photography or CMA Photography. Since my first name is difficult to pronounce, I integrated it into the name of my company so people are able to correctly pronounce my name.
Christia May, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Christia May Alega. I am a portrait photographer based around the Houston and College Station area. I did my first interview with VoyageHouston back when I was a junior in high school. Now, I am an upcoming sophomore at Texas A&M University, majoring in Accounting.
I became a professional photographer after initially taking pictures of my friends and documenting the memories I made. I was then given the opportunity to obtain a professional camera and started to learn its basic functions. After realizing I had a passion and skills, I invested in buying a Canon T6i (my current camera). During the last three years, I was able to develop new skills like using Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop, as well as create new friends along the way.
As a photographer, I have taken senior pictures, graduation pictures, and even baby pictures. I have also partaken in birthday celebrations and special events. I also offer products such as photo albums and prints.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been my current/past clients. word of mouth, new clients come in saying they have seen pictures I have taken from their friends’ feeds. Some are redirected to my website (mypiccha.weebly.com) or simply send a text message.
Social media is also a good source of new clients for me as I am able to share my work and promote my business in the way I want to. Instagram provides an easy way to communicate and allows people to see the different types of photography I can do.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The types of equipment I have right now are the Canon T6i Rebel with a 50mm lens, 18-55mm lens, and a 75-300mm lens. I first bought my camera back in 2018 using all the money I have saved using birthday and celebratory money. I bought my camera at Houston Camera Exchange, where I bought a camera set for at least $600. Since then, I have been slowly upgrading my equipment and learning how to use Adobe services.
