We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christi Bowling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christi below.
Christi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My mom and dad always engrained in me starting at a young age that the sky was the limit and that I could do anything I set my mind to. I always had support from home no matter what career direction I decided to pursue.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
When I was 21 I was diagnosed as a reactive hypoglycemic. I knew nothing about nutrition and was an art major at the time! I started reading up on how to eat best for me and my health and became fascinated with how food can help treat so many different diseases/health issues. After graduating Lipscomb University I went to University of Kentucky to earn a second undergrad in dietetics and a Masters in Hospitality and Dietetic Administration. I have been blessed to have so many great (and unique) experiences in the field including being the first RDN on Walt Disney World’s private clinic on property! My philosophy is to treat every patient as a VIP and give them the most personalized plan possible. I love getting to know my patients and making them feel comfortable with the plan we have set and to let them know they can reach me at any time with any question that comes up. I am passionate about helping my patients achieve their goals and helping them feel their best!!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The majority of our nutrition habits are formed in childhood and behavioral therapy is needed quite often to help unlearn some behavior. I think having a deeper knowledge of behavioral health is crucial for optimal success in the field when helping patients achieve the best outcome.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had an undergraduate degree in Art and had hopes of working in computer animation. I went to tour the number one program in the country and saw that these students had no other human interaction, but just sat in front of a computer all day! I knew then that it wasn’t the career for me. After some praying and soul searching, dietetics fell into my lap!
