We recently connected with Christen Reed and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christen , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I think my very project was a really meaningful project for me. It was my first ever. It summed up a time period of transition and free flowing expression for me. I started off as a business owner and artist specifically in the drawing field and music was taking a back seat. So throughout that time I kept writing music on the side as just expressing myself and ideas, thoughts and that first EP is a combination of those songs and ideas to showcase who I am and what I’m about in a summarized since ti the world. And people loved it too, so that and an even more meaningful experience on top of all the other significance.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Specifically for this, it’s hard to say. I’ve been surrounded by art, especially music, my whole life. I have cousins, friends, and peers who’ve been making music since I was a kid. Plus my mom and my siblings continually played music, engaged in arts and craft, and art like expressions like drawing, painting, fashion design and more so really I’d have to say ever since I can remember. I was kind of born into if you will. So me seeing become a rapper/ artist wasn’t that surprising for me personally. It was always a thought, want, passion of mine growing up. And I believe growing up in that type of mixed environment has help me develop my unique style and sound as a rapper. So many influences and experiences and styles have been exposed to me and me being a sponge growing up, it’s like a soaked this in, and that in, and a little something from here and mashed it up with my personal style, kinda of creating a family but unique and different type of style still. And it’s a cool being authentic to that style too. Sometimes frustrating because people, brands, etc are always trying to compare or put you in a category and box so sometimes messages, thoughts, and even flat out partnerships get lost in translation but the end result of reaching success while being 100 percent you is always a better feeling to me in the end. And that’s kinda of what makes me the proudest about my success in this particular field. The early on stages consisted of a lot, ‘staying the course’ because what’s hot and what’s trendy and what’s proven to get attention and sales, regardless of the damage or messages it sends, crashes with what my vision as a artist and the projects I make and release look and sound like. Subject material and all. And I was reminded more than a few times that my music had the lack thereof , of toxic but relatable ideologies. So staying true to my type of sound and subjects and finding success so fast right out the gate made that whole first period of creating and focus and setting my foot in the direction I wanted to go worth it. Not that anyone should need or seek validation from what you accomplish but it’s not to have that follow through too, with the personally victory too.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my humble opinion and perspective, I believe society can help creatives and their ecosystem thrive by genuinely and consistently supporting them, in multiple or varying ways. People don’t realize how much one share or reposts can mean. Especially in a era/ time period driven by social media and trends, one share can be the difference between exposing some one and their talents to another who then exposes it to another and then to another and now they’ve reached a profitable audience and platform. And that’s really all the difference that I see consistently. People post pictures and videos and reposts celebrities who already have the biggest and most stable platform but forget or flat out just don’t post their equally or similarly talented friend or family member who is struggling to build and establish their Platform. It’s all about visibility and what and to who it can be broadcasted by. And the social media algorithms support this type of showcasing and broadcasting but they themselves will recirculate and prop up depending on the likes, comments and shares one receives. So I think if we just genuinely shared and reposted and purchased or commented the general creative community and their talents consistently, we’d create a more receptive and prosperous community. Which in turn would promote a more industry friendly and supportive environment for the culture of music in general.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative to me, is as cliche as it sounds, being creative. Music is often times a reflection of thoughts, experiences, stories, time periods, trends, whatever the case, but a reflection. And for me, it’s often times a reflection of what’s on my mind about a current or past subject or experience. So the creative process is often times a way for me to express what I’m thinking and feeling and putting it into something tangible. So that whole progress of taking a thought or idea and forming it into a concept from thinking it through from all angles & then turning that into a rhythmic creation or project and having people relate and love that thought or idea you have is a dope experience. .
