We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chrissy Lucia Flynn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chrissy Lucia below.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started becoming interested in health and nutrition when I was a teenager. I read so many books and studied the topics on my own. I was vegetarian for years, then vegan, then macrobiotic with fish, then raw vegan, gluten free, and then omnivore. I tried it all and learnt a lot from the experiences. Throughout my twenties and thirties, friends and family often consulted me with their nutrition and wellness questions. I enjoyed passing on knowledge and wanted to make it official, so I became a certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. In between I also started a small chocolate company, in London in 2008. Organic superfood raw chocolate, made with unroasted cacao, low-glycemic coconut sugar, adaptogens and medicinal mushrooms. It sold in health food stores and cafes around London. I later moved to Munich, Germany, and it also sold there for a year. In 2010 I started selling it in Los Angeles. It sold at Erewhon and other health food stores and coffee shops, in Venice, Santa Monica, Topanga, Malibu, the valley, and Hollywood. I also made custom order chocolates for events and weddings. When I was expecting my second daughter, I decided to take a break and not sell to the retail spaces anymore. Unfortunately the profit margin on food products is small, the raw superfood chocolate ingredients are expensive, and the production is a lot of work. It had been a labor of love for a while. I continue to make smaller scale custom order chocolate products, for individuals and chosen events. I’m still passionate about health and nutrition, creating healthy recipes, and love working with people as a health coach alongside raising my daughters.

Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
I started manufacturing my products in my home, however when the demand grew and I had accounts to fulfill, I had to switch to a commercial kitchen. My first commercial kitchen space was in Venice, owned by Kippy’s ice cream and shared with a dew others. It was a great time, we were all so passionate about our healthy products and making them available to people. When that space closed I chose a co-packer, who took over the production with my recipes and ingredients.
