We recently connected with Chrishan Wright and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chrishan, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
Before founding Blaxit Global, I led digital marketing for a major consumer packaged goods brand. My role required a deep understanding of the product and a clear grasp of the diverse needs of the customers who used it.
One year, I was tasked with supporting the launch of a new product aimed at a core segment of our customer base. However, the product offered no real differentiation from an existing item in our lineup. Leadership underestimated how informed and discerning consumers had become due to the rise of digital devices and social media. This miscalculation resulted in the product launch not performing as expected.
That experience taught me an important lesson about trust and delivering on your brand’s promise. Our brand promised fast relief, but by introducing a product that was essentially the same as another in our lineup, we didn’t give customers a compelling reason to choose it. When trust is diminished, you risk losing customers to competitors and weakening your brand’s reputation.
At Blaxit Global, trust is the foundation of everything I do. My clients place their faith in me to guide them through one of the most transformative journeys of their lives—moving abroad. The Blaxit Global brand promise is to inspire and inform Black people who aspire to move abroad, helping them turn their dreams into reality. I take that promise seriously because I understand the magnitude of the sacrifices made and the liberating joy that comes with choosing a new path.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Chrishan Wright, the Founder and Chief Freedom Advocate of Blaxit Global, a platform dedicated to empowering and inspiring Black people who live abroad or aspire to make the leap. My journey into this work began with my own decision to leave the United States in search of a life aligned with freedom, fulfillment, and joy. That personal experience, combined with my passion for storytelling and community-building, inspired me to create Blaxit Global—a resource that helps others navigate their own paths to living abroad.
At Blaxit Global, we provide a range of tools and services to support aspiring Black expats at every stage of their journey. From workshops and accountability groups to online courses, summits, and meetups, we offer practical guidance and foster a sense of community for those ready to take the leap. One of our signature offerings, the Blaxit Global Passport, provides members with exclusive resources, expert-led discussions, and a supportive network to help them succeed.
The centerpiece of Blaxit Global is the Blaxit Global Podcast, where I amplify the voices of Black expats who are thriving across the globe. These stories are a powerful reminder that creating a life of freedom and fulfillment abroad is not only possible but within reach. The podcast has resonated with audiences worldwide, and I’m proud of the impact it has had in inspiring countless people to consider new possibilities for their lives.
What sets Blaxit Global apart is our unwavering focus on the Black expat experience. We address unique challenges—like navigating systemic racism, overcoming cultural barriers, and creating a sense of belonging—while celebrating the rich diversity and resilience within our community. We don’t just share practical tools and resources; we help people reclaim their narratives and create lives that truly align with their values and aspirations.
I am most proud of the tangible impact Blaxit Global has had. From helping dozens of individuals and families successfully relocate, to building a global community of empowered Black expats, every story of success is a testament to the strength of this movement.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and Blaxit Global, it’s this: We are here to remind you that choosing yourself is always the right decision. Whether you’re dreaming of early retirement abroad, seeking a fresh start, or simply exploring new horizons, Blaxit Global is here to support you every step of the way.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started Blaxit Global during a layoff but returned to work a few months later. Having experienced multiple layoffs in my career, I knew relying solely on a 9-to-5 job was a risky endeavor. To mitigate that risk, I restructured my time to focus on building Blaxit Global while working full-time. This meant waking up 2.5 hours early each day to work on the business while my children were asleep, and dedicating another hour before bed. I maintained this schedule for several years while living in the U.S.
This approach was intentional. While Blaxit Global wasn’t yet generating income to replace my multiple six-figure salary, I didn’t need it to at that stage. My primary goal was for the business to cover its own expenses, which gave me the freedom to experiment with products and services without being reliant on the income to support my lifestyle. Over time, I was able to scale up by learning more about my ideal clients and refining the ways I served them.
I also wanted my business to align with the lifestyle I envisioned as a traveler, rather than becoming a new version of a traditional job. I structured Blaxit Global to support a location-independent lifestyle, setting intentional boundaries around my working hours and times of day. Too often, people transition from employee to entrepreneur but carry a hustle-and-grind mindset into their business, ultimately resenting it because they’ve created another job for themselves.
By building my business alongside my 9-to-5, I kept the stakes manageable and could objectively assess what worked and what didn’t. This measured approach allowed me to create a business that now fully supports my lifestyle without compromising the freedom and flexibility I value most.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My background as an award-winning digital marketer gave me a significant edge when I created Blaxit Global. While I no longer had access to the multi-million-dollar budgets I managed in my corporate career, the strategies I used to position iconic and endemic brands originated with me—and I applied those same principles to building my own platform.
To understand and engage my target audience, I started by building a community on Facebook. This was during the height of the pandemic, when everyone was spending more time online. As the community grew, I expanded to other platforms, including Instagram and YouTube, to diversify my reach and connect with audiences in different ways.
One common mistake I see people make is not recognizing that each platform has its own strengths, weaknesses, and specific role to play. For example, some platforms are excellent for building community, others for driving awareness, and others for guiding people through the consideration phase. However, at the end of the day, your owned assets—like your email list and website—are where the most important conversions should happen.
My biggest tip for anyone starting out is to focus on understanding your audience, choose platforms that align with your goals, and always work toward driving traffic to your owned assets. Social media is a powerful tool, but it should be a means to an end, not the end itself.
