Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chris Sylvester. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I took a risk at 19 years old while a student in Junior College. I was offered a Play By Play position at Cal Poly on the local ESPN Radio station. The time & travel did not allow me to continue going to school at the same time. While many people advised against it, I believed in myself for this job to help catapult me to where I wanted to go. Almost a decade later I’ve called games on ESPN Network, CBS Sports Network, & Fox Sports 1.
Chris, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As an only child raised primarily by my Mom who worked long weeks while my Dad was often away in the military, my love for playing & watching sports influenced a lot of my childhood. It was as early as 10 years old I was calling into sports talk shows on radio to ask questions & give my opinions. The next step was muting the TV & putting my own voice to the game I was watching. By the time I got into high school I had some opportunities to get behind the mic & realized that I could do this for a career.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is being able to tell someone’s story & be a part of big moments in people’s lives. It’s more than just the player or the coach, but as a diehard sports fan myself, I know how cool it is to hear the biggest moments.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I feel like being in the sports broadcasting or media industry is all about resilience. I probably get 50 Nos for every Yes I get when I pursue a gig. It’s important to put everything into prospective when an opportunity you go for doesn’t come to fruition. You have to learn from that & have it drive you to find another opportunity elsewhere or circle back with that same one later on.
