We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chris Shaw. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chris below.
Chris, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
Filmmaking as a whole consists of constant problem-solving. Unexpected issues will always come up and you will have to decide how to react to them. One unexpected problem I’ve experienced is losing a filming location the day before production starts. Luckily, we had done our diligence to have backup locations prepared in case something like this happened. I think it’s extremely important to have a contingency plan on every project and to remain calm during the process.
Chris, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Making the decision to pursue a career in the film industry was not something that I had expected to happen growing up. However, towards the end of high school, I was continuously exposed more to the art form. I had begun to realize the deep love I’ve always had for creating stories and the impact felt from them. Once I had that realization, I quickly knew that writing and directing was my passion. As a writer and director, I always aim to have deep intention behind all aspects of my work. I want to help build a conversation around the themes and topics shown on screen. That’s where I find my meaning within the creative process as I do my best to understand the responsibility of the influence that art has. The style of my work stems from German Expressionism as I fell in love with the high contrasts of light and dark while also establishing a focus on the character’s emotions.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
The greatest resource in the film industry is the community created from it. When I first started in the industry, I didn’t initially realize how important it is to have that support system. The family bond created on set is something that I always cherish and consistently reminds me of the need to lift each other up together.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to always continue evolving and growing as an artist within the space. My driving force comes from the love of creation and telling stories that create emotional connections. I never want to lose sight of the importance of the deeper meanings within my work.
