We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chris Poulson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chris below.
Chris, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My musical journey began back in 8th grade when I first started playing the snare drum in my middle school band class. As I progressed into 9th grade in high school, I decided to join the marching band drumline, where I continued to hone my drumming skills. Additionally, I was involved in starting up a few original bands with my friends, taking on the roles of drummer and lead vocalist.
Following my high school graduation, I enrolled in a community college with the intention of studying both psychology and music theory. It was during this time that I received an unexpected voicemail from a friend, informing me about a band that had recently signed a deal with Fearless Records but had lost their drummer and was in the midst of a name change. In need of a replacement drummer who could learn their songs and contribute to the recording of their debut EP set to release on Fearless Records the following year, my friend recommended me for the position.
Excited about the prospect, I reached out to the band’s bassist, and after some discussion, I was given three songs to learn within a week. Following the preparation period, I auditioned for the band. Despite the pressure, I performed the songs with confidence and conviction, impressing both the guitarist/lead singer and the bassist. They offered me the gig, and that marked the pivotal moment when I realized that my career in music was about to take off.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a versatile American musician from Burbank, California, who has been involved in various aspects of the music industry. I began my career as the drummer and backup vocalist for the pop/rock/alt band Rock Kills Kid, which signed with Fearless Records in the early 2000s. During this time, I gained extensive experience through nationwide tours across the United States. After my stint with Rock Kills Kid, I transitioned to focus on singing and songwriting.
In 2021, I made my solo debut with the release of a 3-song EP titled “Fall into Pieces.” This EP showcased my diverse talents and was made available on major music streaming platforms, enabling my music to reach a broad global audience. Continuing my journey, I released my highly anticipated new single, “Can’t Let Go,” in July 2022. This release presented a new facet of my artistry, earning widespread acclaim and affirming me as a formidable creative force in the industry. The accompanying music video further emphasized me as a visual artist.
In March 2023, I returned to the studio with my trusted producer and engineer to create my latest musical offering, “Gone Without a Trace,” which hit streaming platforms on April 21st, 2023. This release highlighted my evolving musical style, featuring infectious pop-like hooks and leaving audiences eager for more, providing a glimpse into the direction I was taking with my music.
Moving forward in my musical journey, in April 2024, I collaborated with producer, fellow musician, and friend Taylor Carroll (LIT) to embark on my first 10-song full-length LP. After contemplating whether to continue as a solo act, I decided to form a new band, marking the dawn of Sound Siren. The band’s debut track, “The Other Guy,” is scheduled for release on Friday, September 6th, 2024, with the 10-song LP set to launch in the later months of ’24. Fans can expect to catch Sound Siren on the road following the LP’s release by visiting the bands and my social media pages.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s not easy to pursue a career in music, and I understand the challenges that come with it. When I set my mind to something, I make sure to explore every possible avenue to achieve success, whatever that may mean to me. For me, success is about doing what I love and enjoying every moment of it. It’s about meeting and connecting with other musicians, performing at great shows, and simply living my dream. If money or fame were to come from it, I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Sometimes I wish someone had told me that the music world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It can be tough and full of surprises. However, you just have to be aware, expect the unexpected, and do your job to the best of your ability. No one can take that away from you. Being happy and enjoying what you do is key. However, the freedom to do what you want and play what you want isn’t always an option in the music business. It’s a bit tricky. But as long as you’re able to express yourself and be the real you, happiness is bound to carry through your musical journey, or in just about anything that you do.
