We were lucky to catch up with Chris Pelle recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is different for everyone. So, what it takes to be successful is also. What it takes for me to be successful is sacrifice, education, work ethic, and a vision of what success is.
For me success is creating a company doing what I love that is recession proof. So that no matter what happens with the economy, my employees won’t have to worry about job security and our customers will always be able to rely on us. If you don’t have a vision of success, you can never be successful. It must be defined for you personally.
I’ve sacrificed thousands of hours of sleep, weekends, time with family and friends, hobbies, vacations etc. to create a successful company. It is a grind day in and out and once you have employees you work for them, in more ways than they work for the company.
Education is extremely important to success, not traditional education per se but that will give you a leg up in any industry. Education is gained through failures, wins, experiences, conferences, mentors, dialogue with other industry leaders. You can legitimately learn something from everyone in your industry, that something may be what works well or something that you may not work well. That knowledge helps shape your success, it’s easier to learn from others wins and failures than having to experience them all for yourself.
Work ethic is directly linked to your success, if you don’t put in the work, you won’t get the results you want. Being a business owner is taxing on the mind, body, soul, and your relationships. You must find a way to power through that even when you don’t want to. Grinding on everyone else’s day off is what creates success. Success isn’t stumbled upon its created through work. Work that other’s aren’t willing to do.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a former US Army 11B. I’ve been a franchise marketing director; I’ve had a job since I was 10 years old. I am a business coach. I am an entrepreneur and I own multiple businesses.
I have been training dogs since 2012 and made my company official in 2017. My dog training expertise includes K9 training for LEO, protection training, obedience training, and confidence-building. I am a certified K9 Field Training Officer, decoy, K9 handler, a Drug Beat Certifying Official, a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, and IACP. My passions are business and training dogs. So, I took the knowledge from previous careers, combined my passions, and created Complete Canine Training. A dog training company that specializes in Police K9 training and pet dog training,
Complete Canine Training is dedicated to our clients and their dogs. Our goal is to provide the best dog training in Colorado so that you and your dog can live happily in a harmonious environment together. We pride ourselves on staying up to date on the best dog training practices and techniques. We attend conferences annually and all our trainers go through a rigorous evaluation and training process. We can ensure you that your dog is in great hands with us. We strive for perfection in everything that we do, we refuse to cut corners and we guarantee that when you start working with us you will receive the best dog training in Colorado, from the best dog trainers in Colorado.
We are a full-service canine training company located in Brighton, Colorado. Our experience, proven training methods, and excellent customer service have made Complete Canine Training an industry leader in K9 training, sales, and service.
Sometimes very serious situations, with a high likelihood of severe outcomes, can occur. With training, planning, teamwork, professionalism, and help from our canine partners, these jobs are often done safely and discreetly. We are proud to provide law enforcement agencies in the United States and abroad with top-quality canine partners. We strive to provide top-tier agency and handler training to enhance the use of canines in all law enforcement applications.
Complete Canine Training is different from your other pet training companies because we focus on the communication between the human and the dog. We offer “Complete Training Through Clear Communication”. If the dog or the human doesn’t understand how to communicate their relationship can’t really improve the way, they need it to. When we train a dog and human team, we focus on teaching the human how to communicate appropriately and we teach the dog what that communication means. We also test our training in real-world environments like the park or local hardware store.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
My side hustle did turn into my full-time career. I started training dogs as a hobby in 2012 when I got my first dog, Kira. I quickly learned that I loved training dogs and watching them progress. By 2013 I was training dogs for a bit of cash on the side with friends and family. I made a commitment to turn my hobby and newfound passion into my full-time job eventually.
I started diving into dog training theory, online classes, in-person seminars, learning as much as possible. I started marketing myself and taking on clients on the weekends and weeknights after my full-time job. I was absorbing everything I could through experience and through the education I could get while working full time.
As I learned more my passion grew stronger and I started having a solid business that was beginning to infringe on my current full-time career. So, I cut back on dog training and planned my transition. I saved up all my extra cash from dog training and my full-time job for about 2 years. In 2018 I pulled the trigger on a property where I could set up my kennels and transition to full-time work as a dog trainer.
The hardest part of the transition was the leap of faith I had to take in myself. To give up a 100k+ salary for a passion that I had, not knowing if I would make it or not. It was the best decision I’ve ever made!
Complete Canine started at the local park with 1 or 2 clients, now we own a professional training facility and kennel capable of housing 32 dogs and we train over 500 dogs a year employing 14 people and growing!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
There are three main things that helped build our reputation in the market. First, we set standards for our service to our customers and clearly set their expectations. This ensures that we deliver a product and service that is going to meet our client’s expectations or exceed them.
Second, we go above and beyond with customer service. We have customers for life not just while their dog is in training with us. Anything we can do to help our customers we do, whether it be extending their training program at no additional cost, or doing an in-home lesson, etc. we ensure our customers are successful.
Thirdly, we ask our customers to share their experiences. It’s great if your business is excellent and all of your customers are happy, but they aren’t likely to tell everyone about it on their own. So, we make sure to prompt our customers to write us reviews and grow our reputation.
