We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chris Nash. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chris below.
Hi Chris , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I grew up around music. My grandmother was a famous Church soloist many years ago. My parents played a bit of guitar and piano as well. My biggest musical education was growing up listening to the soft rock and Country classics constantly playing on the family radio. Grandma taught me to sing and play piano. I learned many Gospel songs. I took formal piano training for 2 years, then in my teens, discovered the guitar. I began composing music almost instantaneously. I played in several bands through high school and college, learning the craft as I trudged along. I’ve seen almost every aspect of the music business and decided in my early 20s that I wanted to be a creator, and not just a performer. I played heavy metal, hard rock, and later alternative rock. I didn’t get into Country music, the music of my youth, until my mid 30s. According to family legend , my grandmother met Johnny and June Cash at a Billy Graham crusade. The book “Man in Black” was my favorite book for many years and still remains in my vast collection or literature.
Along the way I earned a degrees in psychology from UNCW and music therapy from ECU. I decided to take things further and earned a Master’s in Music degree and worked for 7 years as a music therapist for a major North Carolina healthcare company. I made a lateral move in joining the faculty at my 2nd Alma mater: East Carolina University, where I taught and counseled graduate and undergraduate music therapy students.
My writing and performing career intensified to the point that writing and performing took up most of my days.
I’ve released several singles and an EP, available on almost every streaming outlet. I perform weekly throughout the Carolinas and have built a solid, loyal following. My biggest dream is to place my songs on film and television. I write vicariously. I’m easy to find. Look up “Chris Nash Goes Fast” on Spotify for a starting point. Here’s to following dreams!
Chris , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
“Chris Nash” is my brand.
I write relatable songs about many aspects of life. My message is to follow your dreams, and to not give up. My message is to help make the world a better place, one interaction at a time. My message is to be thankful to God, to take care of each other, and never stop learning.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve performed music in every and I mean every type or environment. The life of an independent, struggling musician is not for the faint of heart.
You either learn how to adapt to unforgiving physical surroundings, be it weather, ergonomics, situational, etc, or you quickly realize that this is not the life for you.
I trained to be a Boy Scout, and several of my family members served in the Military.
You learn to survive a quickly changing business. I’ve developed my interpersonal skills over many years, undoubtedly assisted by my experience working in the lowest and middle level of the restaurant business.
I believe in myself and my motto is “if I can do it, so can you…you just have to want it bad enough.”
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have a story to tell, and I’m spending my entire life to learn how to tell it.
