We were lucky to catch up with Chris Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chris , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
My mind was made up. Im going to do this. Then I asked myself but how. So I immediately started to design and order business cards. I created my website and after that excitement died down I realized I need a business plan. So I begin to do my due diligence. Who did I want to serve, what’s my mission statement, oh yeah I need a tagline lol. Then my next thought was how am I going to afford start up. Well luckily for me my customers pay me upfront so I didn’t really have any overhead besides marketing. So I began to spread the word amongst social media, friends and family I had created a business number through Google and to my surprise it rang. My heart was racing and I was over come with excitement. I answer with the most professional and proud of my accomplishment voice…Thank you for calling The 6ft Cook. My name is Chris how many I help you. The anticipation building only to be let down by the response of has your car warranty expired…..darn robot telemarketing. But I wasn’t gonna be defeated for long. I continued to look for different ways of exposure and finally got the call I was working for.. It then became official. I booked my first event. From there word of mouth began to work for me and 12 years later we are still going strong.
Chris , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been in the culinary industry for my entire life. I grew up inspired to want to learn to cook at my grandmother’s table. The food was so good and brought so much happiness. So once I got into the work force I began to develop my craft always looking to learn. Then one day my wife finally convinced me that I had the passion, skill, knowledge and desire to become an entrepreneur. I wanted to build a company that not only brought service back to the service industry but also one that was affordable and without all the hidden and extra fees. That was one way I wanted to give back to my clients. With over 20 years in the industry at the time my dedication, attention to detail, and heart to serve others we began to exceed expectations. That’s what foundation we still stand on to day. We are currently looking to launch our Chicken Salad collection alon with our BBQ ribs and sauce. Our biggest accomplishment to this days was made April 2011 and that was overcoming the fear to start! With so many obstacles at the beginning I could have made every excuse not to., however with the support of my wife Tequita The 6ft Cook is here today
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Everyone knows this recent pandemic was something different for a lot of people and definitely for small businesses. With events not happening and the uncertainty for the future I had to begin to think about survival for the business and few employees I have. That’s when we got into the delivery side of business. We created accounts on three major delivery platforms and got to work. Although it was slow to start up we made it through. Now that is a added part of our business with this past year picking back up on the catering side of things.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
With this great resignation age we are in finding quality employees may be difficult. However I believe in this one golden rule. Treat others how you want to be treated. Although every employee is there to collect a check they stay for the respect. Unfortunately I’ve experienced a lot of companies that fail there employees everyday by forgetting that they wouldn’t exist if it was for the people willing to do the work. Here we are always looking for ways to give back through things like profit sharing or even buying a simple $2 lottery ticket and give out at random. You don’t have to break the bank however things like that helps the employees feel invested into the success of the business.
