We were lucky to catch up with Chris Mari recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
One of the biggest trends we’re seeing is A LOT of golf professionals are leaving the industry post-covid19.
It’s creating a huge demand for new up and comers to come in and take their place within the industry. When GolfDigest released ‘The Club Pro Crisis’ article a year ago, it sparked brand new conversations of what needs to change within the industry in order for people to stay.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always been passionate about the game of golf, I grew up with a golf course in a backyard, if I wasn’t in school, you could find me there almost every single day. I started playing the game at the age of 2, and I haven’t stopped since.
I never thought I would be one to work in the golf industry, but obviously life had some different plans for myself.
I started working in the industry in 2018 as a tournament director, and I tried many roles after that until I landed on the one that I was really good at and the most passionate about, teaching and coaching the game of golf.
I started my teaching and coaching business in 2020 right in the dead heap of the pandemic, and thanks to a decent social media following, my business grew more and more each passing day!
I’ve also have been lucky enough to be a contestant on 2 seasons of The Blox, an entrepreneurial reality tv show hosted by MTV’s The Challenge Wes Bergmann.
Using the advice I received from the show, I got the unique opportunity to help create the business I am apart of now, Full Swing Physical Therapy and Golf, which is a 100% indoor facility and is one of the very few golf facilities in the United States that contains a golf instructor, a golf performance trainer, a physical therapist, and a mental golf coach all under one roof.
For myself, I teach on Foresight simulators, and I have every crucial piece of technology inside my office that can help improve one’s golf swing, and my office is conveniently named ‘The Lab’.
The solution that I solve is quite simple, golf is a hard game, I am the guy you call that can help solve the problem’s you have, and I help you how to make this game as simple as possible so you can improve faster, and have more fun playing it!
What sets me apart is the fact I really try and make my explanations as clear cut and simple as possible so people, regardless of age, will be able to understand and follow along to what I am teaching them.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media by literally posting a form of content every single day for 4 years straight. Most people won’t have the patience nor the time to do what I did, but I still do this now and I grow followers little by little every day.
Most of your posts/reels/videos are probably gonna suck, but you have to start somewhere, if you wait until you’re ready to do it, you’ll never be truly ready, so might as well rip the bandaid off now.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Most of my clients have become my close friends. In the golf industry, it’s a people business. You have to care, you have to listen, and you have to put their needs above yours in order to be successful, especially in the teaching and coaching business.
When clients see that you care about them, it gets reciprocated back, fostering brand loyalty, and I am thankful for each and every single one of them that has stuck by me all these years.
