We recently connected with Chris Loomis and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve been working on is still ongoing. It is a series of high-concept fashion photo shoots in collaboration with an extraordinary fashion designer (Galina Mihaleva). I met this designer at an event in 2007 in which a series of her pieces were in a fashion show in Phoenix. I was mesmerized by these works of art and became very inspired. I subsequently introduced myself to her and the rest was history.
What makes this series so special to me is the length I go to to prepare and embellish the location where we shoot these pieces, worn by model’s we carefully select. From painting the perfect background motif to adding fun, whimsical or otherworldly props as location adornments, I find this ongoing series endlessly compelling and inspiring!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I graduated from the University of North Texas (UNT) where I got my bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Photography and Radio Television and Film. Following that was a move to California to attend Brooks Institute of Photography where I furthered my photographic education. Since then I have remained in the West/Southwest and have been blessed to shoot for numerous commercial, editorial and personal clients for going on 21 years. Design, art, architecture, nature, science, science-fiction, surrealism, the paranormal, music and even old cartoons…name some of the many things that have captured my interest since childhood and find a way to influence and inspire me to this day, particularly in my photography…through concept, lighting, use of color and embellishment. From personal projects with high-concept productions to illustrative commissions for clients, I am constantly striving to evolve my vision while maintaining the highest level of quality and art direction.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Ultimately I would like to exhibit my work in galleries, have more shows featuring my fine art photography and also work on producing our second volume coffee table book that features my fashion photography specific to the designer I mentioned earlier. Eventually, I would also like to produce some short films.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The internet…(laughing). When I first started out in photography there was no internet, no You-Tube and certainly not to the infinite stream of information that people starting out now in photography have access to.
