We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chris Latham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chris below.
Chris, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
The key challenges of establishing my own practice were figuring out which software to use and how to attract clients. When I started, I had no idea how to build a website or what to put on it, so I asked a few mentors who provided guidance. Building my own website was the first challenge. I used what I learned from my mentors and by viewing others’ websites. Attracting clients was the second challenge. My mentors provided advice on this as well. I also did what I could by offering free talks and by walking into other health practitioners’ offices and introducing myself. I still have a few practitioners who regularly refer to me.
The thing I would have done differently was build my website using WordPress. I used two website hosting services and spent more money and time than I would have by using WordPress, which is easily scalable from the start.
If you are a young professional considering starting your own practice, don’t be afraid to go door to door. Simply, by walking door to door I got more referrals than I would have hoped for.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am extremely passionate about health and have always been fascinated by the human body. I am also an athlete who wants to stay in shape, so I can do the things I like. I always wanted to become a doctor, but life led me down the path of nutrition. I was fortunate because my family liked to cook, which taught me the value of good, healthy, home-cooked meals and steered me toward nutrition. I was going to take the traditional medical doctor route but became more interested in the power of food and nutrition to help heal. This led me to get my Master’s in Clinical Nutrition and then become a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition.
I now help those who are not feeling well, suffering from disease, or simply preventing disease. I do this by looking at your total nutrition and lifestyle factors like sleep, exercise, and stress to develop a personalized plan. This plan may include stool or food sensitivity testing to see if one of these may be affecting your digestion. I then give specific recommendations to get my clients to better health. I combine an integrative and evidence-based approach to help people regain their health and get back to living life.
I am most proud of helping my clients feel better than before their illness. I work with the client to determine what works for them and at go at a pace they are comfortable with. I’ve been down this road and understand how they are feeling. I want them to know that we are in this together and I want to make sure they get to where they want to go.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being willing to learn is critical for success in a dynamic, constantly evolving field like nutrition. I learn from my clients every day and take what they say to heart. I love to learn, and they teach me a lot.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Starting my own business was what changed my career and life. I knew I always wanted to be my own boss, so when I was laid off from my last two corporate jobs, I felt like the universe was telling me to work for myself. So I listened and here I am today with a successful nutrition practice. If you believe it will happen, it will.
